Today I checked out a Pettit+Sevitt home for sale in Kenmore, Brisbane. Pettit+Sevitt architect-designed homes are known for their white painted-and-bagged brickwork, exposed beams and natural timber finishes. They date to the 60s and 70s. I just adore them.
This home (I think it was dated to 1975) was something-kind-of-fabulous. Our grand plan is to buy a home to move into at the end of this year. A Petitt+Sevitt would be an absolute dream (for me if no one else!). If only we were in September rather than January.
This one had barely an issues that I could see, apart from some poxy tiling done in the early 2000s (which I'd happily take-to with a chisel) and a yard in need of some work.
Unfortunately, my first impression was that it might be too small for a family of six, given it only has three bedrooms - two of which were tiny. There would very definitely be a need for an extension at some point, and we'd have to boot-out the au pair, but there was room on the block for another couple of rooms ...
See the wood work? Ceiling to floor bookshelves.
Apologies for my dodgy photos ... a mix of i-phone and being under pressure. I find the competitve aspect of inspecting houses quite stressful. I wish all those other prospective buyers would just disappear and leave me in peace to mentally measure rooms and imagine my furniture etc. in situ.
How's the in-built towel rack? I just love stuff like that ... even the white laminate is fabulous.
So much glass ...
The Solid Gold Dancers weren't too impressed, saying in loud voices "We can't fit in here! I don't want to sleep with Solid Gold Dancer #(insert-a-number) for the rest of my life!"
This was the view across the street. I'm thinking those two trees may be Fiddle Leaf Figs-type things ... my other obsession at the moment ... nursing a sick house plant and all.
Thoughts on the house? I expect it'll be under contract by the week's end.

Ooh it's lovely! I've no doubt your dream home will come up precisely when you need it to.
ReplyDeleteLove the glass and the bookshelves.
Yes it's luff from me too Carmel
ReplyDeleteThe towel rack thingy, the glass, the slated timber trim on the exterior, the book shelves, the pool (you always said your new house had to have a pool!). Everything about it is special.
I've got two words for you to end: bunk beds.
It's a cracker! So you.

It's a beauty! The kids could tolerate bunk beds till you could add a couple of rooms.
ReplyDeleteAh Yes! The six bedroom family home is a tricky rarity to find. I have one that routinely wafts up from the room he shares with his twin around 10 pm to moan that he'd even give me his skateboard it he could have his own room. That Kenmore house is a cracker. My mother in law has a similar one over there that she keeps threatening to sell but once again only 3 bedrooms and a study. Maybe all the families were smaller during that era. It reminds me a little of the Spencer houses around the Gap too from that time. How exciting to be really house hunting now. Keep us abreast of the inspections!
ReplyDeleteLovely house, Carmel!! I can really see you here! Bunk beds, then a carefully planned extension, I'd say!!
ReplyDeleteSo not even a pool could tempt them? Curse those fussy Solid Gold Dancers 1, 2, 3 & 4!
ReplyDeleteWe've been eyeing off a house which goes to auction this weekend. The kids reckon they wouldn't move in if we were to buy it. At least the house you're looking at seems to look secure, unlike this place where some of the external doors don't even close. We'd be creating lifetime anxieties and patronising a psychologist weekly with fears of robbers & boogie men!

Love it! My best friend's house growing up had those exact built-in towel rails, so practical. Tell your solid gold dancers my kids would all sleep in one roo if there was even a remote chance of having a backyard swimming pool!!! :-)
ReplyDeleteLove all the windows and light in this house, and a pool too. I agree with Kylie about the bunks. Could you put SG 1&4 together and SG 2&3 together or would it be a crazy nightmare? Keep looking- write a list of exactly what you want, that's how I found Betsy, she had everything on the list but her outsides looked different so I didn't spot her instantly. mel x
