It's a blog post. That's what it is.

How long has it been since I posted?

(Rhetorical question.)

No need to answer along the lines of ... "Well, it'd be 17 days because you last posted was on the 12th of August".

No need for an answer like that.

Work's been keeping me busy. And I wouldn't be able to do it without people such as Korean H.

Here she is listening to Solid Gold Dancer #3 do his nightly reading.

Warms the cockles. Though she does need an electronic translator, to translate words like 'kaleidoscope'. But that doesn't bother me.

I'm happy as long as she knows words like 'FIRE!' or 'HELP! SOMEONE'S STEALING ME FROM THE FRONT YARD AND THEIR NUMBER PLATE IS  .... "

You get the picture.

The Husband is always lamenting that he doesn't have a 'Lazy Boy' or however those chairs are spelled. He's not lamenting in a 'kidding-you' kind of way. He laments in a way that makes me fear that one day I'll find myself in Super Amart looking at 'Lazy Boys'.

So I'm hoping to nip-that-nightmare-in-the-bud with one of the above. It's leather; its sunken; and it's 70s Scandinavian and doesn't have a cup holder.

We spent some of today in Katherine's shop. Playing with things, and 'Wow' ing over typewriters and asking how we'd 'replace the toner' in one.

I think I'm going to have to go back for this table. It's been marked down and no one wants it.

Though my biggest concern, if it were to come home with me, is a possible future of smashed glass, Lego-men everywhere and a jugular vein rhythmically spurting blood.

By plonking this Solid Gold Dancer #1 in a fibre-glass Eames, I'm hoping subconsciously she'll become an industrial designer.

'Best & Less' seems to have come-out with a high-end children's line. I'm impressed and bought a few bits-and-pieces today.

It's all red-and-white-and-blue and striped and chambray and reasonably priced and there's not a bit of lace or a skull or a transferred word within a mile.

Even Target is out-doing itself in the sock department.

This Solid Gold Dancer's now a year older. We've been baking. I out-sourced her birthday cake because I know my limits.

Playing games ...

And picking flowers from our crazy 'grandma' garden.

And swapping a glass of wine an evening with a glass of soda water and elderflower cordial because if you drink too much wine after a stressful day at work you can end-up being a lady who sleeps at the train station and mumbles about Mid-Century stoneware and the benefits of corkfloors as opposed to tiled floors and so on ...

I like mine mixed with some diced tomatoes.

  1. OMG Carmel, my husband wants a hideous Lay-Z-Boy too! He has been going on about how great one would be for years. And he's serious too. He is so not going to get one, even though he reckons it will be cool like Frasier's dad's chair in Frasier. Yeah, right.

    1. MY husband makes me watch Lay-Z-Boy television commercials and says we can buy two. One for him. One for me (to set fire to).

  2. Oh, you crack me up! Mr LC is dying for a lazy boy as well. I'll die if there's one in my house.

    1. Deb, have you told everyone you're going to Paris?!

      I bet you don't see a Lay-Z-Boy there.

  3. I best get myself to Best & Less lickety split! Those clothes look great ... but surely there has to be a sneaky skull, skateboarder or Princess in Training motif somewhere?

    1. It was the Best & Less at Mt Ommaney. It seemed like a specific children's off-shoot store. We were in there for ages. There were skulls and princesses too ... but I steered clear of them.

  4. Mine can have a lazy boy if he builds a yurt down the back to put it in. I had a DollyVarden cake when I was four and never forgot it. Happy birthday, ms Martha. We may have to have a play in the park over the road some time soon. I am finished keeno and ready for the swings!

    1. What the hell's a 'yurt'?

Let's play in the park and drink some elderflower cordial to bid good-riddance to Keeno!

We can discuss your new foray into the world of commercial crafting.

    1. Yes, a great chunk of Indooroopilly has gone.

B&L at Mt Ommaney. See comment above.

  6. I have to admit that I'm just about as bad as your husbands about wanting a comfy chair. I have an orange leather Ekornes that is far more comfortable to me than any mid-century chair I've ever sat in, even an Eames lounger, so I refuse to give it up. In my defense, though, it definitely has more style than a La-Z-Boy...which I wouldn't allow in my house, even with a gun to my head. (One of the most memorable disagreements my late husband and I ever had was over just such an issue. He had...get this...a LIFT chair that had belonged to his elderly aunt. You know, the mechanized kind that propels you out...and he wanted to put that in our living room. Aaaaarrrrrrgh! Of course, that didn't happen, and the lift chair was Craigslisted...LOL)

I love the table you found, and I think you should get the typewriter. I'm looking for one myself and avidly read Ton S's blog (I dream lo-tech) about the typosphere. Until I "met" him, I never knew there was a whole sub-culture of manual typewriter collectors out there...or how many gorgeous old typewriters there are.

    1. I know the type of 'lift chair'. Hmmm.

I bought a typewriter when I was living in London back in the 90s thinking I was going to be some sort to beatnik writer. I bought it from Portobello Road markets. I'm sorry I got rid of now.

  7. Happy Birthday Martha! My stepfather had one of the first Eames loungers, it was so much better for his back and circulation than a La-Z-Boy. Tell your husband that. Do you really put tomato in your elderberry wine? Love your posts, always uplifting!

    1. Neen, no I don't put crushed tomatoes in elderberry cordial. They just happened to be in the photo and I had to explain them away.

    2. Sigh, I am so gullible...but you never know, my mother puts olives, grapes and orange slices (and sometimes onions) in her wine. She has the locals convinced it is a British drink. I hope you are enjoying the beginnings of spring!

  8. Ah yes, glass tables. Mum and Da have a rather funky 60's round glass model with poofes that fit underneath - bery hip. We managed to tip it over a few times but it hasn't broken yet. On the other hand, when Molly was a pup, she smashed through the top of a glass table with not a cut in sight! If you like it, go for it!

    1. I know the type of table you're talking about. They're pretty cool. I think they're called fondue tables.

Don't tell me scary stories about Molly. Resilient little pup.

  9. I have a perfectly "as-new" daisy wheel typewriter here for anyone yearning for the day.
    Even corrects its mistakes.
    Happy 3rd Martha.
I could have a loan of Korean H when the childer cool it in the mountains.
She could read to me as I knit.

    1. Solid Gold Dancer was doing all the reading. And his books are very soporific. All about engines and magnets and electricity.

  10. Lord, how I'd like to outsource being read to. Those school readers are the most uninteresting of all the written language has to offer. I, too have traded my evening drink for soda water with a dash of Bickfords lime. Nowhere near as relaxing, but supposedly so much more beneficial. And Martha, I shall find a way to send you a rainbow cake next year! You do only need to bake two at a time, the most important factor being the gel colouring for the vibrance. (Sorry I hadn't replied earlier). I must photograph my mother-in-law's cork floor next time I'm down. Only one more sleep till Friday!

Glad to hear the tip re the cake. There are other birthdays ... as you'd know.

  11. Are you really going to buy that Laizeeboi?! I'm going to Best & Less tomorrow on your recommendation. Ah, Midwinter Stonehenge. And 'Moon' is my favourite. I feel like I'm repeating myself a bit because of Instagram. But I don't care. You don't care. I like that orange shelving unit and I love your dining table. (I've forgotten I even HAVE a blog.)

  12. See the comment above re Best & Less. It's a specialty Best & Less kidswear shop. I'm hoping you have one in the 'berra. Yes, instagram is fab, but I feel like I'm boring people because I've said it a.ll before

  13. Love the little snippets of your weeks, they always make me smile. I have a scar under my lip from stitches after a fall onto a very similar looking glass coffee table when I was 4 so maybe hold off on that one for a bit. But definitely go the 70's style chair - if your husband is like mine, I'm sure if you called it a La-Z Boy he wouldn't argue :-D Happy Birthday to the birthday girl - I loved that doll cake when I was a kid too. Do you need a photo of cork flooring for real? We have some lovely orangey 80's cork flooring throughout the kitchen complete with 30 years of scratches etc if you'd like to see. I want to get rid of it but it is soooo practical with a tribe of kids that I would probably replace it with same :-D
Have a great weekend! Mel x

  14. Been missing 70s s'pah. I think I need to get on this instagram thingy. Hope Miss M enjoyed her birthday. Keep driving around Bris with her gift. I am going to have to carbon offset it soon.
I have just bought some floral jeans to put a spring in my step for saturday night. Thinking I might return them and make a trip to Best and Less where my money will be better invested on the young 'uns.
I like that orange shelf thing. Would look great on Ground Zero? Where is this shop. I think I should make a trip.

  15. If you get yourself a Lazy Boy, or indeed a Jason Recliner, you'll no doubt soon find yourself enjoying the comfort of a pair of Hush Puppies, and then MMMC, you may as well just call it quit's. It's all downhill from there. I hope your husband sees the error of his ways and decides on your more stylish (Danish) lounging alternative.

  16. Thankyou for blogging again. You make me laugh. Out loud. In a nervous kind of way, because your imagery of the Lego men and jugular vein rhythmically spurting was all too graphic. And btw, I am obviously out of touch with the Australian cultural milieu, because I have no idea what a layZ boy looks like. Though I reckon I can guess. Like a Lazy Susan except in the form of an armchair. Right?

  17. The chair thing is a priority. Learn from me... I now have a floral wing back plonked next to my low line chic leather couch... True and very sad!!

  18. We're going to have to have a nosey at Best and Less now too I think...
    Loving that orange display unit!

Am i the only one not on the instathingy?!

  19. I keep missing your blog posts! Always late to the party! Say no to the Jason recliner. Life is too short to live ugly...although they'd be comfy. Also, I have some Jo booty to pass on to you. I hope you like hornsea heirloom brown pottery as well...She is incredibly generous. She also passed on a lot of monkey pod wood bowls and platters. Let me know if you want some as there is soo much. Just check my instagram and pick out what you want. Seriously. Please. x

  20. I keep missing your posts too, I deliberately check regularly, I don't want to miss out on anything! It's a wife's duty to provide her husband with a 'man chair' but the lazy boy is grounds for divorce, go the scandi! Mine rests nicely in a Fler swivel chair, they can be taught! Good luck in producing an industrial designer, I'm working on mine to become an architect! Go great kids loathes, I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds the 'I'm trouble' t'shirts and stereotype graphics annoying! Go the where 's Wally outfit any day! LOL Pippa xx

  21. It all starts with a Lazy boy and the next thing you know he's going to want his own sitcom as well. They are just nasty nasty nasty- do not give in. So good to hear of kids clothes without slogans or skulls, quite hard to find in my opinion. Good luck with the industrial designing aspirations. melx

  23. Those italian tomatoes must have left the country under a false identity. Never heard of Val Verde. It's probably the same thing I'll do very soon though, even if I am not believable as a vegetable and I can't fit in a can. Maybe I could pretend I'm Korean. I do have an electronic translator. Such details as my crazy curly hair and large eyes are not important I guess, bad perms and plastic surgery exist in Korea too.
Martha's kitchen is bigger than mine.
Solid Gold dancer number one should be taught that when you sit in a Eames chair, YOU SMILE.
We don't have a lazy Boy chair In Italy. I guess it was banned due to the already high number of divorces.
