This is our dining room.
I'd originally put it near the kitchen, but some friends suggested I move it near the front windows to make the most of the sun. Being easily lead, I did what they said, and here we are!
Another friend suggested I get rid of all the curtains and have bare windows (like a true modernist), but I actually like the curtains (as brittle as they are) and will keep their meshy-goodness until they completely fall apart. I'll then replace them with something similar. I'm not a true modernist and hope to mix the original features of this house with modern design elements.
Dining room chairs are original Arne Jacobsen 3103's which I've never used. I've had them for about six years (stacked preciously in a corner). They're finally at home here and have been surprisingly robust.
High fives for parquetry floors!
High fives for parquetry floors!

So you've got me reading your blog ... You know I hate not knowing what's going down ha. The photos in your last post made me feel quite whistful... Your burb was part of my youth and sometimes I wish i was back on the 85 or 518 as the bus route became. My childhood friend's parents are those now oldies you write of. Dining room is lovely xx
ReplyDeleteI can't believe you're reading a blog! I'd better put up some great posts! It's such a great 'burb. I feel lucky to be here. You can share some stories about your time here when you come over!
DeleteI live seeing these corners of your new house. I can literally feel the love and excitement you have for your new digs oozing out of every photo! (except maybe the one with the rampant noxious weed in it) Aside from that you are completely putting me to shame with getting back in the blogging saddle, i just need to get these kids back to school first! mel x
ReplyDeleteMel, what a lovely comment. I am excited to be here. It's not perfect but finally we've got something groovy with potential that we can play with. I am loving it!! As you can see, my blogging has slowed ...
DeleteHello, I am new to your blog, but looking forward to reading more as I love your style!! I think that the curtains look great! xx
ReplyDeleteHi Amy, thanks for your nice comment. The curtains are fragile. Someone's already admitted putting their fist through one!!
DeleteI like your curtains too. And your timber valances and your parquetry floors, and your Bitossi and your chairs. And, and, and!!!
ReplyDeleteHello, thanks for liking the curtains. I need some hooks. I should've entered your toilet roll giveaway!! Wait 'til you see our medieval toilet roll.
DeleteThe windows are fantastic! I'm nervous about the chairs. I see myself screaming and lurching across the table when children lean back in them and balance on the back legs. Or was that only my children? They are too beautiful to have stacked in a corner though. It's as if all the lovely furniture pieces you've collected over the years have been waiting for this house. Everyone's happy now and in their right place.
ReplyDeleteI've done some screaming on your behalf, don't worry. The Solids have been warned not to swing on them. They know a 'warning' when they hear one!
DeleteHow about a close up of your Bitossi smalls? I want to sit at your table and stare at them.
ReplyDeleteI'll do a Bitossi post. They're not that exciting though.
DeleteOhh parquetry floors are stunning... you lucky lady.
ReplyDeleteAnd good on you for using those precious chairs. I'm getting braver and using precious pieces I've collected on a daily basis now. It's a shame to have them stored away and not appreciate their beauty every day.
x
Zara, it is a shame to have things put away. I've decided. Enough is enough!! (Until of course something breaks!!)
DeleteThe chairs are so beautiful...and I love your floor and your big window and your blues and greens. Everything is just right.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dana. Big call from you!
DeleteCan just picture some Swedish meatballs being shared around that table. And a whole pile of red hot sibling disharmony!
ReplyDeleteOooh! I have a great recipe for Swedish meatballs that I pull out every Christmas. I've toyed with the idea of cranking-up the fondue. So much disharmony. One of them held a 'sharp piece of Lego' to another one's throat ... I'm lucky to wake up alive every morning!
DeleteI'd keep the curtains too. I'd have curtains in this house but that would require some effort on my part so we are going the bare windows look. Love this pocket of your home. xx
ReplyDeleteI'd really love to get you and Jason over. I need some tips. It's a bit like being starved for years and then being placed in front of a smorgasborg. So much to do, but I don't know where to start.
DeleteHigh fives for dining rooms in the sun and new houses. Curtains keep it warmer in winter too.
ReplyDeleteIt's freezing in this house. There's about two inches of room space so no insulation. Curtains stay! Hello by the way! (And I'm on the other side to you.)
DeleteI love this space! I also like that your easily lead too, so when you have a moment please send me your new address, I would like to complete the look with a small extra! :)
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to send me anything, heavily-pregnant one.
DeleteIt's good to be home.
ReplyDeleteCertainly is. Thank you. xo
DeleteLove your chairs! I can't believe I said that.
ReplyDeletexo
I can't believe you said that either! Crazy Canadian lady!
DeleteCarmel!!! I haven't visited you in too long. Look at your beautiful house and your beautiful children! How did you get here? Watching your days go by from over here in Honky town. xxx
