The second I turned into the main road I saw the above set of chairs. I pulled over immediately and started to panic knowing I'd stumbled onto something special but I had no one to help me put them in the car. I couldn't even remember how to flatten the back seats I was in such a fluster.
So I rang home and called in the cavalry who had to walk to me because I couldn't leave those chairs unattended.
The chairs are plywood and have been upholstered at least twice. That upholstery has to go and I'm seriously thinking of getting the whole setting re-sanded and re-stained. Look at those curves and oblongs!
The table extends but the extension has seen better days so that'll be ditched. A clever Instagram follower suggested we'd found ourselves a set of Arne Jacobsen Pre Prop chairs for Asko dating about 1968/69. If only. Google Pre Prop chairs and you'll see what she means.
The Solid Gold Dancers have adopted the setting for themselves. They love it.
I visited the owner today to thank her for the setting. She said the set was hand-made for her family in about 1968/69 by a local furniture maker called Peacocks Furniture. She said she was too old for it now and we had to be careful not to sit at the front of the chairs because they'll tip-over under us.
I haven't been able to find anything about that Peacocks Furniture, but have never seen anything like these chairs before and I think it's fab to have some mid-century locally-made furniture. They're heavy and solid and slightly chipped, but with a sympathetic repair I think they'll end-up looking smashing.
Spurred on by our first find, we headed out again in the car. The Solid Dancers have now fine-tuned design-sensors and were picking-out furniture left-right-and-centre. The above is a perfect replica Max Breuer with its replica tell-tale "Made in Italy" sticker.
We then relieved an old lady of her replica Butterfly chair. It's metal but not as heavy as the usual Butterfly chair so in the next thunderstorm it'll blow across the road and take out a geriatric neighbour but, again, with a new cover it'll look fab.
And finally, the husband spotted this concrete planter. I scrubbed it with bleach and it matches perfectly with the concrete-sprayed walls. Yes, our external walls are sprayed concrete.
And the print that caused it all? A print which used to hang in my parents' room during the '70s of an Aboriginal stockman or tracker with his daughter. It's sat in a dusty old shed for the last ten years or so. So another bit of old junk to add to the collection really.
I love the old stuff better than the new stuff.
Oh, that awesome last pic of the SGD on the laptop, with the old bunny ears next to the TV. A classic! I do think the kids deserve the table and chairs, after helping recover it. Here's the link to the chair I mentioned on IG- ok, maybe you're shair is a bit too special for this! But i'm dying to try it haha http://mypoppet.com.au/makes/2012/09/how-to-cross-stitch-chair.html
ReplyDeleteI'm going to checkout your link. Thanks for including it. If I find another chair worthy of cross-stitching I'll send it to you Bec!

ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible find. So cool you were able to track down the history from the previous owner. Love that the SGD have honed their picking skills. You've raised them well. What a haul!! All of it, but especially the setting. Wow!
ReplyDeleteJ, It's pretty cool isn't it. I worry that I might have trained some pickers. I know someone whose hard-rubbish habits have rubbed off on her offspring ... much to her horror! ;)
DeleteThe dining room set is phenomenal. The plywood looks like teak, and the curves are extraordinary. Having bought or found most of my vintage furniture at local sales or on Craig's List, I know that sometimes original owners have a great emotional attachment to their furniture. They have told me how important it is that the furniture goes to someone who will take care of it, and treasure it. The photo of your children sitting on those chairs is beautiful, and you do great honor to the furniture maker and original owner by giving the set new life with your family.
ReplyDeleteI think Peacock Furniture may have been an important part of the Brisbane MidCentury Modern movement. I found a chair made by this manufacturer on http://www.brisbanemodern.com.au/photo-gallery.html. (I couldn't resist researching the company since your dining room set is so amazing.)
DeleteNeen, you really do leave lovely comments. The two boys woke up early on Sunday morning and were sitting at the table first with their ipads. They've never sat at the table first thing. It's also in a nice spot in the sun. And you are seriously Official Researcher of the blog! I can't believe you found something about the furniture maker! I'm happy to reupholster this set. Hopefully we can keep it in use for years to come.
DeleteGosh, feel bad about not reading blogs these days as I've missed the thing about Peacock. Yes, they were a local furniture maker back in the day. They were high end. There's not much around about them. The chairs in Brisbane modern were found by Chris at a holland park estate sale about 8/9 years ago. There were 2 chairs which were simply amazing. That's all I know but I'm sure there will be more info when someone does the research... Anyway, love that you have this set. xx
DeleteI'm averting my eyes from verge collections these days Carmel because seriously...we've got too much stuff.
ReplyDeleteI would've bought these treasures home if I'd spotted them though because SERIOUSLY, WOW!
I had no intention of picking anything. I've even stopped shopping. We have enough! Now we have two dining settings! What am I thinking?! But I love it!
DeleteHey me too on the shopping! Seriously.
DeleteI feel the lurve for your dining setting(s - both of them ie your old one as well) too.
I think Google ate my comment ... it was witty (or at least it attempted to be) ... something of a reference to Regurgitator and how I'm liking your "old" stuff better than your new stuff too. Damn you Google wanting to sign me back in again.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of Regurgitator when I wrote that last sentence. What's with Google?! The cheek.
DeleteRestore this baby and how big are your babies now! 😍
