I'd hoped to have this post up earlier than now, but you know how things are ... how they get ... how things pan out.
As you're aware Brisbane Open House is annual weekend event which focuses on Brisbane's amazing built spaces - many of which are opened to the public to visit and enjoy.
The weekend is rapidly becoming 'capital S' Super popular, and obtaining tickets to some of the most sought-after homes and buildings is becoming increasingly difficult.
I was lucky enough to visit three houses in the so-called 'cul de sac' in Fig Tree Pocket which is home to a leafy enclave of architecturally-designed homes which are either owned-and-occupied by their original architects or a relative of same.
The first of the houses I visited was ...
Conrad Gargett House 1971
Built in 1971 by architect Lou Hailey of Conrad Gargett Architects for the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Queensland.
This house has been recently bought by another local architect and his family, after being in the same family for about 43 years.
It retains many of its original features, but has had a sympathetic renovation to bring it up-to-speed.
The kitchen has new marble bench tops with american walnut joinery.
I read recently that the original landscape designer - Janet Conrad - assisted with the new garden, which is beautiful.
The above table (and I think the side board) were original pieces which came with the house. The table has the wonderful provenance of being designed by Brisbane's Hayes and Scott architects.
The timber and brick walls are magnificent and anchor the house to its origins.
Broad eaves flank either side of the flat-roofed house.
Tour over.
This is my favorite. Ah, all that slatted wood. That front door makes me weak at the knees.
ReplyDeleteHi Carmel,
ReplyDeleteI read all of your architecture posts when you first posted them, sorry I've been so tardy in the old commenting department
(this doesn't mean I wasn't interested - to the contrary, I'm just lazy and a bit pushed for time)
I wish I lived in a mid-century home instead of a turn of the century home. I am so over our wonky shop house it's not funny!
Like Dana, this is my fave. They're all fabulous though - I'd happily live in any of them (happily?! I'd be over the moon!) West's Furniture showroom is awesome - I've got a bit of a thing for indoor water features a-la the Modernist indoor swimming pool in the '72 flick of Agatha Christie"s Endless Night (fave A.C. movie)

(the only pic I could find in a hurry)
Oh and speaking of movies, I've been working my way through Woody box set (twenty of the little beauties!) - a present from Anth.
Hope all good in your hood. How are the solids going?
Does any of this make sense? x
