Let's look at some of the colourful projects which have kept me recently and otherwise distracted.
Yes, it's the Dolls' House again. We'll start with a room-by-room, fine-tooth-comb explanation of the Dolls' House because I don't think you've seen enough of it. The roof is painted White Knight Cherry Red enamel.
These decal trees I got made especially for the Dolls' House. You can see more here.
I chose the sorts of trees and colours and got them appropriately sized. They're bespoke trees. I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of decals, but I thought they'd look good in this context. The back of the DH, you can see, is a black board. The exterior paint is Taubmans Favorite Fawn (susceptible to fingerprints unfortunately).
The roof garden: Here we have decal clouds, also from the bespoke bloke who did the trees, but I asked for smaller-scale clouds. The sky is Dulux Mineral Shower (c/o Sonia) There's an astro-turf lawn, some vintage dolls' patio furniture, a fish-tank plant in a plastic pot, some plastic roses as hedges, and some refreshing cans of dolly-sized, ice-cold coke from my Canadian contact.
The kiddies' room: Here we have vintage wall paper, a mix of Ikea and Lego furniture, and some vintage West German wooden furniture that I had when I was smaller than I am now. The walls are painted in Taubmans Orange Slice.
On the floor, we have a Moomin rug aka Moomin dishcloth which you can buy from Stockmann Finland. But mine came from Elisabeth. On the walls we have a sample of artwork from the Dick Bruna's Matching Card Game series.
Soft furnishings are made by me from sewing scraps, except for the crochet blanket on the four-poster bed which came as a collection of flowers from Ingrid.
Master bedroom: Linking the kiddies' room with the master bedroom, is a miniature garland of pom-poms. I was inspired by Max (who's also taking part in the I'm a Giant Challenge). The room is furnished with a kaleidoscope of Ikea and Lego furniture. The walls are covered in vintage wallpaper from my good pal Zigsma, and are otherwise smeared with Taubmans Ancient Sphinx. The rug is hand-made from pieces of felt, and the vases are Dinosaur Designs miniature rip-offs.
Kitchen: The kitchen floor is vinyl slate cut-offs from Reverse Garbage. Furniture and family pets by Lego. The walls are papered in vintage wall-paper, and artwork from Bruna's Matching Card Game series.
On the left wall is a little black-board pig ... perfect for writing down a couple of necessary grocery items.
Dining room: This room may be my favourite, purely because the floor took so long to paint. As a base we have Taubmans Hi-chrome yellow, with Orange Slice, British Paints' Hot Pop Red, British Paints' Sonora Rose, Taubmans' Split Lime, Mineral Shower and Titanic. Art work again by Bruna.
Here we've dressed the table with a fabric scrap table cloth.
Bathroom: Despite having my favourite vintage wallpaper, this room was the most frustrating to complete. There's a whale painted in Ancient Sphinx, vintage West-German cupboard, and an ice-cream container bathtub. The floor is wooden vinyl cutoffs again from Reverse Garbage. I wish I could do more in here, but I'm not sure what.
Lounge room: There's a lot going on in this room. You can see it over-looks the manicured front lawn. Walls are papered in vintage wallpaper and painted in Taubmans Split Lime. The floors are covered in faux-wood contact. Furniture is a combination of vintage Barbie Town House and Ikea, along with a hand-made coffee table and planters.
A collection of bead vases encapsulate the tropical tones of this room. There is a leather cow-hide rug under a pine coffee table. Cushions are all Marimekko and a fish-tank plant is set in a lime green planter made from the base of a pavlova egg (inspired by Artistica Domestica).
On the wall is an original print entitled Sundays Afternoon by Israeli artist tushtush.
In a misjudged photo opportunity, I realised that Dolly fails to wear undies, but we're all friends so let's overlook that fashion faux pas
In this part of the lounge room, we have various beads masquerading as vases and what-not, a sheep skin rug, Marimekko and green-velvet soft furnishings, a bespoke 70s wall mirror, and a fish-tank plant in a bullet planter (inspired by here) all made by me.
Fabulous.
Whoopsy, I noticed that this Dolly's pants are falling down ... but let he or she who has never publicly disgraced themselves throw the first stone.
For more colour slams around here, look at what me and my new best friend, Ms Staple Gun, have put together.
A new seat cover for this swivel chair. How easy is upholstering, readers? It's easy.
As for Advent calendars, I got in, just in time, to make up for last year's lack of, and bought this vintage Italian one. It's too cute. In a recent post, Bobbi the funniest Italian I know, asked me how I knew something was Italian. Well, generally people will tell me if it's Italian, and I'll believe them. Wrongly or rightly.
And then I've been whipping vintage tea towels into fabulous wall-hangings complete with dowel rods. We'll keep one, and give the other one away to some lucky, little tyke for Christmas.
And hold onto your knicker-bockers, check out Martha's "new" bed that used to be my bed. Complete with Marimekko canopy and bedspread.
Acting on a moment of insanity, we dismantled her cot. Wrongly or rightly. Now she sleeps like a Scandinavian princess in an Australian toddler's body and most of the time it's not in her new bed, but in her parents' bed. There's something to be said for enforced incarceration in a cot.
Phew. Speaking of sleeping, I'm now going to put the blog to bed. It's impossible to work everyday, come home, pretend to adequately look after four children (ie feed them, smile at them and talk to them), and then blog about the superfluities. The blog's got to go. To bed. Finally.
So, to everyone who's commented along the way, and to those who have donated things for the Dolls' House, thank you.
PS I think our lizard is pregnant. Finnish K thinks I feed her too much banana, but I beg to differ.
She's got a belly full of something.

I really really love your doll house - I think I want to come over and play... (or maybe renovate our cardboard one to make it more like yours).
ReplyDeleteI have found my own blog impossible to care for lately, with even less on my plate than you, and so, as much as I want to beg you to let your blog stay up late, I wish it sweet dreams xx
Thank you, Catherine. I did notice you weren't posting as regularly as you used to. It's time to end mine, if I don't be final about it, it's like an onus hanging over my head. I don't have any time or fodder for it any more. Carmelxo
ReplyDeleteCarmel! I love the bubbles in the bath tub, and all the wallpaper and flooring! (love that Reverse Garbage!) Martha's bed is fabulous - I had a four poster when I was younger, not as nice as that tho! (white and brass)
ReplyDeleteAND the tea towel wall hangings are brilliant!xx
ps. you're not really going to stop this blogging thing are you?!
ReplyDeleteNow the funniest Italian you know is very very sad. But i understand. Sometimes it's hard for me too... smile at my eight cats, feed them...but my blog has become my window to the world. It's fresh air. Maybe you could post a lot less, but still post every now and then? (read: please stay!!)
ReplyDeleteYour dolls' house is blimmen amazing, bet you can't even stop looking at it now (those are always the best projects, the ones that catch your eye each time you pass them...). Also loving the upholstery and advent calendar, and taking your waring VERY seriously, re the move from cot to bed. Every so often I think about making this changeover, and then I think about what will become of our evenings when the child has no cage around her. I wonder how many years I can keep her in there?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, you will be sadly missed, and i hope you find time to pop back every now and then with a post. They are always amusing, and inspiration-filled x
Martha does love her new bed though...look at her cheeky little face, she's thinking I love my fancy new bed, it means I can sleep with Mum and Dad. Yay!
ReplyDeleteYou worked wonders on that dolls' house Carmel (it's like Babette Hays love child) why bother with the law...perhaps it's time to consider a new career in interior design...you might have more time to blog...
Nah, not really. I totally get where you're coming from but I'll miss your posts, that's for sure.
Take care and have a lovely Chrissy x
Carmel you've outdone yourself. That dollhouse is grouse!! It's so colorful and fun - and original! Well done. Hey why not think about linking this up to my Saturday Splendour Party :) x
ReplyDeleteTotally flippin' fabulous! I hadn't realised/noticed the dolls house was actually that massive - wow, its all amazing! Wonder if that yellow wardrobe could be bursting with mini-groovy outfits? But then again, if there's commando-style going on, maybe not ;)
ReplyDeleteLove the way you've been patterning and fabric-ing up the main house too....
I haven't blogged for weeeeeeks, then suddenly picked the camera up this morning when I noticed something.... never say never (I hope). x
Ach, you're not REALLY stopping, are you? Please just have a little pause, not a stop. I love your advent calendar, it's awesome. I'm not going to say goodbye because I don't believe you're really going to stop. Come New Year you'll hear a little voice calling, calling... 'Blog me...'
ReplyDeleteNoooooooooo!! Say it isn't so!!
ReplyDeleteI'm very sad.., but totally understand and I've only got the one little monkey...
Fantastic finale though, my jaw dropped further with every frame!! If there was an award for the world coolest dollhouse, you'd have it in the bag!
I've loved every sweet, funny and fabulous moment of MMMC. You will be sorely missed. Best wishes El xx
Really? Again? You know you've been trying to get out of this blogging caper for a while now. But I totally get it. Life. It's very busy.
ReplyDeleteYour house is awesome. I just love that bullet planter.
And how cool is Martha's new old bed. xx
I laughed all the way through this post until the bitter end. sob. I know you are tres busy and I totally understand. sob. I love the ingenious use of the bubble wrap.
ReplyDeleteLove and kisses from your Canadian contact.
Oh no please say it aint so... can't the finnish nanny stay so that you have time to blog? Sigh...
ReplyDeletePS - I want to come and live in that there house!
Best post ever. The dollhouse is stupendous! I'm so very impressed with all your crafty designing. Martha's bed is fantastic. I want to sleep in a bed fit for a princess. You've outdone yourself MMMC.
ReplyDeleteGuess what I found at Waste Management?? Yes, a doll house. I have been having fun arranging furniture with my 19 year old son who claims he wishes he were a still a child, a girl child even...what have I started here?
I don't know what to say about that fat lizard.
For goodness sake MMMC! I was so intrigued and reading your descriptions so carefully as if my whole past and future interior design plans were predicated on this doll's house, that I gasped in shock when you called " bedtime" on your blog. Well of course dear Martha is almost a teenager - can tell from her slightly arch pose in one of the shots. She is telegraphing that she thinks that Mum is slightly mad and she really wants an ipad not a stupid doll's house, for F's sake. "I didn't ask to be born etc etc", (Oh what joy you have to look forward to MMMC).
ReplyDeleteSo - stay with the blog, please. I love reading about normal family life in Brisbane. I love reading about life in Australia full stop. None of my dears blog and I wish they would. Btw we're over to Sydney in January. Not sure we can run to a trip to Brisbane but it would be fun as I have made some other Queensland blog friends. Still all I am saying is good luck with the job, and frankly I don't know how you do it with four children. Cx
The DH is well above par.
ReplyDeleteOn a scale of 10, possibly a 9 and a half.
As I read through the description, I went into real estate mode and fancied I was listened to a golden voice about to ask me to get out my cheque book.
A nappy on the dolly would be the way - much easier to make than panties.
Hat elastic for the loose trews.
Possibly a chair in the bathroom with discarded clothes draped on it?
I shall miss this spot.
Goodnight from me, and goodnight from him.
I smell a pavlova! Once you get a room in the law chambers you might pop in a blog post occasionally about the nutty antics of those whacky law people. Do keep us posted also on important domestic developments like lizard multiple births. Never say never, Carmel. Like Schwartzenegger and Marimekko, you'll be back!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I can't believe you were brave enough to put your tushtush in the Dolls house. All the babies in our dollhouse are now naked and the furniture topsy turvy. It looks like there was a 'fully sick' frat house party in there! Resetting it has become my newest therapeutic obsession. The real plant lives on.
ReplyDeletePPS. Making up for comments not in the future- I just realised your dolly was doing a Sharon Stone and displaying her tush tush too! This is how I started blogging! Too much to say on your comments!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely adore that doll house! I picked up a doll house for $20 last week that needs a total over-haul, I'm hoping to have it finished by Punk's birthday next month... better get started, I will have to keep coming back to this post for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI have thought occasionally about not blogging any more too, but luckily I haven't let my impulsive self just announce the end all of a sudden (well, not yet anyway) as I really think I'd miss it way too much.
Have fun living life to the full, but you can always return if you miss it, that's the beauty of it & being a woman - it's our prerogative to change our minds after all.
I am still laughing at the missing knickers.
ReplyDeleteThe house is AMAZING. I have not touched my do-up dolls house yet but am totally inspired. And I am totally jealous of Martha's bed, perhaps it is too exciting still too relax and sleep in? Perhaps she can not believe what a lucky princess she is.
Your blog will be missed. Again.
Carmel, I will miss your incredible wit and humour, and the cheeky glimpses of your gorgeous four. Wishing you a wonderful festive season and all the best for whatever the future has in store for all of you. You will be missed indeed.
ReplyDeleteNOOOOO!
ReplyDeleteAnd again.
NOOOOOOOO!
The dolls's's' house is bloody spectacular. Now it's finished, you may just find a minute or two to blog?
xxx
Blog to bed? Sad :( Will miss you and your witticisms and pretty things. But understand.
ReplyDeleteAND Your doll house is AMAZING! I love it.
hahaha! wow, fatty! perhaps a rat? a possum?
ReplyDeletei love those wallpapers,
especially the one in the bathroom.
can i move in?
xxx.
Your house is amazing. What a brilliant job.
ReplyDeleteI'm not going to comment on the terrible blog news - you know how I feel about that. Hugs x
Your bubble wrap as bubble bath is brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI was so enthralled with all the wonderful photos I completely missed the part about you putting your blog to bed! You know how much I will miss it, you and your sweet family but I totally understand. Maybe when/if things settle down, you will return. I can only hope. I may do the same. We still have email. I will miss those little cherub faces.
ReplyDeleteMartha's bed is delightful!
ReplyDeleteomg too cute!!! def LOVING all the pix

a colourful exit ms mmmc! The doll house is a triumph, the rainbow floor and the bullet planters are my especial highlights, just marvellous stuff! I LOVE the advent calender with a passion that makes me want to burgle your place, and your've done a grand job on that chair, bed...no wonder your /tired=blogged out!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy a summer of love with your family x
Cannot believe you are bowing out AGAIN. Totally understand of course but at this stage hoping against hope that you will do a John Farnham and just keep having revival appearances. Actually if you could step up so John could go to the retirement village you would be doing every one a favour. By the way, the bathroom- needs a mini chandelier just like the one that Fun & VJ's has in her dining room. No idea how to do it, hoping against hope that thought will eat away at you until you come back with the goods.Best wishes otherwise. melx
ReplyDeleteWe'll miss you Carmel, please don't say it's forever!! You sure wrapped it up with a brilliant finale.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the gazillions of hours of fun with the doll's house & a Summer holidays with baby Blue Tongues. Love Posie
Oh Carmel, I'm sooo late to the party here - please forgive my tardiness. The dolls-house is a showstopper - extraordinary.
ReplyDeleteBut no! Not another 'fin' post. That is such a shame. I told you why last time. I totally *get* the whole time constraint and guilt thing but you have such a fresh and unique voice in Blogland that I'll really miss you. 'Encore', pretty please? J x
Fabbo house my love. Feel like I've just had a tour of a celebrity mansion.
ReplyDeleteAnd sad to read of the end again. I have become addicted to your turn of phrase.
Glad law hasn't diminished the glow of your creativity. May it never do so.
Merry Christmas Carmel and Co.
PS. I do declare that that bathroom needs a toilet!
That dolls house is incredible... and Martha's bed equally amazing. Can you please come to my place and decorate?
ReplyDeleteGood luck - hopefully like big Arnie - you will be back....
I hate it when you put the blog to bed, Carmel. Every single time. Your chair cover is divine, and I think I'd like to live in your dolls' house.
ReplyDeletexx
Love Martha's smile, and her divine bed.
ReplyDeleteI too hope you will reconsider, like when those lizard babies appear!
Thinking of you,
Lilli xxx
you. are. a.ma.zing! seriously. i am secretly wishing i am a princess in martha's marimekko designer bed!
ReplyDeletewishing you very merry holidays!
The house is beautiful ... what an achievement. I do hope you decide to stick around to show and tell some more. :)
ReplyDeleteOh my GOD - I want that doll's house! I had one a bit like this in the 70s (where the bleep is it - need to set out a search party in my parents' attic), all funky fabrics and wall papers, so cute. But 'my' furniture was no where near as fantastic as this - this just instantly appeals to my inner little girl who wants to play!
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely blog you have - I'm glad you kept going! ;-)
