Two

Just a little more than two years ago, I was ready to finish Law and get a job and make some money.

And then I discovered I was going to have a fourth child.

I was mildly upset, to say the least. All my grand plans were suddenly, irreversibly, ruined.

But at some point during the pregnancy, I had a 'moment' ...  for some reason I thought of the story of St Martha in the Bible and how she was always too busy working to ever relax and contemplate and listen to what was really important.

For instance, new undies on the outside are important.

So, I accepted the fact that my plans were thrown asunder, and I promised myself that if this fourth baby was a girl I'd call her 'Martha'.

I'd call her 'Martha' so that whenever I looked at this fourth child, she'd remind me of what was important.

She'd remind me that working and making money is not important.

Martha turned two today and whenever I look at her I have to plant a big kiss on one of her fat cheeks. (And, I never chose a boy's name, which is lucky.)

We still have to work on our 'smile'.
If it were biblical Martha's birthday, I estimate she'd be about 2024.

  7. I think you are absolutely amazing to achieve all you have and be a wonderful Mum (to FOUR kiddos!) too. And I really mean that. You're pretty inspiring actually...a great role model for Martha and the rest of the gang.
That Miffy cake is rather wonderful too.

  10. I hear you, sister. I woke up in the middle of the night crying for a week when I found out about our M, numero 5, two-ster. I had just gone back to work, paid off the card, got the last one off to school and I couldn't imagine how it could work. We have had maybe three dodgy nights with her, she brings infinite joy for all and, best of all, she forced me to just stop. Today we spent two hours lying in the garden laughing at stuff I didn't know was there till she showed me. Now I can't face the thought of giving it all up again!

  11. Love this story and that Martha has such inspiration and purpose behind her name. I hope she is always a stop to roll around on the grass kind of child. The Miffy cake is superb.

  12. Martha, dear. I am so pleased to see you had a happy day with your supporters. Miffy is a timeless classic and your new kitchen is simply a dream. I look forward to discussing the minutia of two-ness with you particularly the nuances of undy wearing. (I prefer them worn jauntily over the head). I cannot imagine what other use they have in mind for them. Happy Birthday!

Child of Annie x (P.S. Now she has come over all sentimental.)
