The dolls' house is providing much lie-awake-in-the-middle-of-the-night, can't-get-to sleep time.
That's not the dolls' house, that's one of my birdy friends.
Who'd have thought dolls' houses were so much fun?
We're all loving ours. Well, the Husband doesn't love it that much, to be brutally honest.
My good pal, Reader 3, suggested I get some astro-turf for the roof garden.
The man at the hardware store gave me heaps of fake grass for free, so if anyone wants some astro-turf - (not enough for a tennis court though Grandad) - just say so, and it's yours.
Since I took that roof-top photo, I've added some more kitschness in the form of plastic flower hedging. Looks fab.
We've been playing with furniture arrangement and adding some wallpaper.
I only have one roll of wallpaper, so there's been limited action on that front.
The house looks more Scandinavian than Mid-Century at this point.
You'll see we have some Dick Bruna adorning the walls.
See that little rug? Well, yours truly made it. (That was another Reader 3 suggestion). Breathtaking, I agree.
I'm now going to show you how you can make one yourself.
Gather up all your strips of fabric scraps. The ones that you refuse to give to Kindy for craft as the snotty-nosed, unwashed don't appreciate Liberty scraps when they see them.
Sew all the thin strips end-to-end until you have sewn three long separate strands. Then with a steady hand, 'Blue-tak' a bulldog clip to the wall, and clasp the end of the three strips of fabric.
Plait the three strands together so you have one long plaited strand.
Like so ... then roll the plaited strand into a twirly-whirly roll, bit-by-bit, and sew the back of the twirly-whirly roll together.
Before you know it, you'll have yourself a little rag rug, for the rug rats who live in the dolls' house.
Next tutorial, I'll show you how to make mini-doonas and cushions!
Because I have an assignment due next week and an exam to do, I've been searching for THE PICK of dolls' house furniture on Etsy for you.
These would be perfect for the roof garden ... here.
I am enamoured with this Mid-Century armoire ... here.
Gorgeous little crockery ... here.
This makes me feel ill, it's so beautiful ... here.
And isn't this one piece of fabulousness ... here.
It's a Barbie piece, but I'll turn a blind eye because it'd look good in front of a mini-tv ... here.
Another Barbie piece ... here. It's circa 1980s but has some great appliances.
A watering can for the flower hedge ... here.
Freshly picked flowers for the credenza ... here.
And the mini-tv ... here.

Fabulous Fun in the doll house! I love the wallpaper...delicious! I am going to be on the lookout for mini furniture now. If I find it, it's going in the mail to you MMMC! Oh, and you might want to let the babies have a little doll house time, don't hog it Mom!
ReplyDeleteI love all your finds. But I especially love that I've now found someone better at procrastination than me. I take off my crown and pass it on:))
ReplyDeleteI have wallpaper for you!! Now you can sleep easy.
ReplyDeleteDo you realise what a dolls' house of worms you've opened? (Nice use of apostrophe BTW - you've cleared up that confusion for me.)
MCM,
ReplyDeletethe kids can play with it after they've washed their hands and put everything back in its exact place!
Kerry,
I see procrastination time as 'subsconscious ponderings on the academic'.
Zigs,
Hmmm, wallpaper eh? Goody. I subconsciously pondered the 'postrophe, and considered that as there are three dolls residing in said dolls' house, they are joint tenants and all own equal shares, thus 'postrophe placement.
The grassy roof is nothing short of inspired. Excellent suggestion Reader 3!
ReplyDeleteThat little rug was made with love, and time. You're outdoing yourself in this house reno. Who knew there was so much wonderful stuff in miniature to be had?!
I was going to say - well done! Procrastination Queen! But ah, isn't it great to have something terrific to show for it. Love the Disk Bruna, love the four poster bed, love the freaked out cupie (sp?) doll in the dress. Now... are the kids allowed to play with it?
ReplyDeleteLove love your dollshouse. In fact I am just a little bit obsessed with them myself. My daughter has two - one I made from a kit and a wooden one with Zoffany wallpaper and lots and lots of Sylvanian families living in it complete with music room and latte machine.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, before I started my blog I toyed with the idea of a dolls house blog rather than my current mish mash. How cool would that be?
Hope you are well xoxo
your dollhouse is comming along nicely! Would hubby enjoy it more if he got to decorate a 'man cave'?
ReplyDeleteLove the furniture finds! Good luck on your exams, I know you won't have any trouble on the Trolling Etsy 101 or Dollhouse Renovations: A Study in Procrastination exams! I see you are well studied on those fronts!
I thought you had crocheted the rug from scraps! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI painted a dolls house for our two a few years ago, i think the only thing i ever put on the walls were little mirrors i came across. Nowadays i would be putting some retro wallpaper up!
Looking good so far - keep us updated on the interior decorating!x
Kerry's comment was a classic. You know, that mid century doll house furniture is way too cool.
ReplyDeleteYou should start a whole new blog - Make mine Miniature Mid-century. You could chronicle the renovation of your... oops, I mean Martha's doll house.
Now get back to work! xx
Ah, we need a fake lawn roof garden for our doll house now (in that not-needing needing kind of way) - I love your work!
ReplyDeleteReader 3 is so full of good ideas that a curbside pick up "house of dolls" (because I am always unsure of apostrophe placement) sits untouched at her abode. It has been two years, maybe three. I am floored at what you have accomplished in two days, maybe three. Inspirational. Maybe I need to go back to Uni to get some things done around here.
ReplyDeleteThat furniture to die for -- makes me terribly nostalgic for our old dolls house days.
ReplyDeleteMy dad made me lights & a tv that worked in my dolls house. Used his model railway skills. The tv worked by putting slides into the back of it. I thought it was way cool!!!
ReplyDeleteYou've been a busy bee! I love the pictures and your rug is so cute. I'm off to cull my mini treasures and see what I have for you.
ReplyDeleteNow back to studying!
p.s. How did you ever get Horsey(s) on the roof? Sassy couldn't do that.
This. Is. Fantastic.
ReplyDeleteThat is all.
So jealous this is amazing I love the t.v.
ReplyDeletethe horses seem to have the best part of the house!
i knew it! you DON"T sleep! I can't wait to see what you make when you're working full time as a lawyer!
ReplyDeleteAll that gorgeousness in one post...not fair! Glad you're enjoying your new toy. Share with the kidlets a bit, why don't you? :P
ReplyDeletew
I'm just wondering who's enjoying this more, you or the kids? It's you me thinks!
ReplyDeleteThe raggy rug is great :)
ps that bird looks like he's about to poop on your washing!
Interesting stuff awaiting you here to add.
ReplyDeleteHowever , that kewpie doll will have to forgo her afternoon nap with Horsey and his clone on the tractor cutting that fiercely sprouting grass each day.
A fruitful garden filling the top story may not catch on, but what's a Horse meant to do?
Ah, so this is the wallpaper project. How cute is that furniture, my goodness!
ReplyDeleteHappy to send you some wallpaper scraps, to help out with the wallpaper situation. Although I'm pretty sure one flower will take up an entire wall (it's a pretty big pattern). Let me know if you want some.
I hope that bird didn't do you know what on your washing! I would like a grown up version of that rag rug. When son 2 was into making little mini worlds we used to make garden hedges out of green pot scourers like scotch bright. You make layers until you get your desired thickness, cut them up and glue the layers togther, it was quite good and way cheaper than hobby one. cheers Katherine
ReplyDeleteThe mini deck chairs made my day.
ReplyDeleteI have tried to make my own dol's house for ages, but it takes time! I think I will just buy an ikea shelf and go with it. It's fun and relaxing isnt'it? (God only knows how much I need something fun and relaxing these days!)
ReplyDeletep.s.
ReplyDeleteI want a birdie friend too.
oh, can i move in there once it is done? i promise to shrink to fit.
ReplyDeletenice project you have going there. i love that mini sized rug.
oh i love this !
ReplyDeletestill a little girl somewhere :)
