Lizard love

We're officially in love with our lizard.

In fact, there are two lizards. The one on the above-left is a male, I suspect, and the one on the right, is a female. I sense it.

I've been working hard keeping those bastard bush turkeys away from our lizards and their bananas. There's a bush turkey feigning interest in a soccer ball. I've never seen a bush turkey play soccer. I know the devious ways of bush turkeys.

One lizard is a lot more friendly than the other. I think that's the male. In fact, I'd put money on it. I read that blue tongue lizards can have a territory as large as 15 house-blocks.

I also read that blue tongue lizards are quite bright, and can recognise people. This blue-tongue lizard sneezes. He's cute when he sneezes. But don't worry, I don't think he's sick. I read they sneeze to clear their nostrils as they use their noses to dig and snuffle about.

I think this lizard is starting to get used to us staring and following it around asking it questions.

Where are you going, lizard?

Why are you back all-of-a-sudden?

Can you really scale walls?

Now where are you going?

He left at about 1pm-ish, and came home at about 4:30pm-ish, and vomited-up all the banana he'd eaten earlier that day. I hope that's standard lizard behaviour.

And I think I am suffering burn-out. 12-hour days at university are beginning to take their toll.

I've had to stop the Mondrian dolls' house for a bit, because I was shocked at my choice of blue for the bathroom.

So I'll start it again. I was wanting to paint it teal but, obviously in some over-worked daze, chose a shade of a more Rimini-blue hue which just won't do.

And in BREAKING LIZARD NEWS ...

We watched a small blue tongue lizard come from next door ... all the way to our house ...

to eat some strawberries. How's that for a roller-coaster of a Saturday? I know. Get out.

  1. Oh gosh you are funny and a lovely lizard carer. I like that. Bananas and strawberries? I hope they realise how spoilt they are.
Ps just sent you email with doll house inspiration :)

  2. ! So great to see a lizard!
Every time I go to our mail box, I hear someone scuttle away in the bushes underneath. The girls have seen him - but he won't show his face for me!
Maybe I should casually drop some fruit there the next time!?x

  3. I love reptiles. I wish there were lizards in my garden too. But it would be a zoo then. Owls, cats, dogs, hedgehogs...and lizards? Maybe it would be too much.
When my parents were still married we had a house on the sea and the garden of this house confined with a river: one day a big green lizard got on the bed while my mom was getting dressed and she reached for it and took it in her hand thinking it was her belt!!! As 'the belt' got suddendly alive she nearly had an art attack. That was Pino the lizard who had a life in reverse mode. Most reptiles are catched and then they become belts...he was a belt (for a second and a half) and then became a spoiled pet.

  6. SarahB,
thanks for that link. Those dolls' houses are too groovy! Dolls' houses everywhere. They're like insects ... they'll take over the world.

    Jennie,
leave some banana out ... the lizard and postman will love you. I also read they (lizards) like scrambled eggs. If you could be bothered.

Bobbi, that has to be the funniest lizard story I've read. That's also the funniest belt story I've read. Sadly, I read cats and lizards are best kept at arm's length.

Deb, I not really a fan of horses. But I love your horse. So we're even. Imagine if we taught this lizard to ride Sassy, where would life take us then? The mind reels.

    Zara,
make a friend with your lizard. I also read they're great at keeping snail populations at bay. Who wants snails in their garden? Not me.

  7. I am extremely impressed at your ability to work out the sex of lizards from a distance. That is a super useful skill. We have bob tails and they are renowned for eating strawberries (and apparently snakes eggs which I consider a Good Thing)

Very concerned about the bathroom colour. The dolls will not find that relaxing whilst they indulge in their candle lit baths. I do, however, approve of the apple green room below...

    Hope all is well.
    Take care.
    xx

  8. Hello Mrs Farmer,
I'm not that great at telling the gender of lizards. I made a wild assumption based on their behaviour. If that makes me an herpetologist, then so be it. Anything that eats a snake's egg has my stamp of approval also.

I hope by 'apple green' you mean, chartreuse. I noticed 'chartreuse' and 'teal' are BIG colours this season in interiors. I'm trying to stay on-trend. Pity 'teal' is such a hard colour to pin-down.

  9. I've been showing Stefan your lizard posts- he's very jealous and wants one of his own. I told him he's more than welcome to go to the pet store and talk to them- but they must stay there! Your's are very cute, especially since they stay outside!

  10. Crikey is all I will say about those blue tongues.
Love the dolls' house. Great choice of colours. And those 12 hour days sound pretty bad. Take it easy.xx

  11. I so meant chartreuse. Obviously, I was just checking you were paying attention...

  12. I love a good lizard. The boys used to make lizard worlds in a big rubber tank with twig trees and a pond till they had to let them go at tea time.

We found lizard eggs at the school working bee today and they were relocated by B2 and an entourage of small fry.

Do you think if we lived in Canada it would be baby bears?

  13. Haha, those lizards are awesome! Now about those bush turkeys, those are wild right? I mean, you don't have them as a pet? Yes, us Europeans/ Americans have never heard of bush turkey so please enlighten us... :-)

  14. you've got some nice buddies hanging around there...
when we were young we had a turtle. one day he disappeared. i remember it was a huge trauma for us. anyhow
lets hope they will hang around, munching on strawberries much longer.
and hopefully they will get rid of that bulimic behavior! ;)

  15. I see baby lizards in your future. Perhaps they could start their little lizard family in the doll house. Martha would like that I think.

  16. you certainly do have to deal with plenty of excitement around your place! maybe you were channeling lizard tongues when you picked the color for the bathroom? i'm with you, blue belongs on lizard tongues, teal will be much better.

  17. I think the fat lizard is the female about to lay her eggs.
I'd keep following her to watch that exciting event.
Pity Martha can't fit under the cement slab.
I can see your long, long days contributing to that noisy blue colour.

  18. Oh Faux Fuchsia was complaining about Bush Turkeys too, are they taking over Brisbane?? Love Posie

  19. Hee hee, love your lizzard antics. Maybe horsey should team up with them...
just tonight one of the youth group teens mentioned that when he was helping dad do work in their basement he found one of my old toy lizzards and they both thought it was real! James poked it with a stick and dad grabbed it by the tail and threw it before they realized, lol!

  20. Pamela,
haven't you got a new baby to entertain your husband? New babies are much better than lizards.

Brismod, I won't be diving on any lizards or tying them up and dragging them to my zoo.

    Mrs Farmer,
    I knew you knew.

    Annie,
I think it would be baby bears. You're a braver, more tolerant mother than I.

    Cowroad,
bush turkeys are wild. They're also protected by legislation, so if I harboured a desire to strangle one with my bare hands, I'd be prevented from doing so.

    Sarapirat,
that's a sad turtle story. I hope the lizards hang around for a while.

MCM, the lizards can stay outside. I read they have some gross re-skinnning habits, which sometimes requires human assistance. I draw the line at assisting a lizard to shed its skin.

    CBS,that blue is very blue-tongue. I think you're right.

    DMC,
blue tongues give birth to live babies. And I think the males are more territorial.

PosieP, if Faux Fuchsia lives in the western suburbs of Brisbane then she'll have bush turkeys.

    Laura,
you know I did think of putting Horsey out on patrol. Great minds. I laughed at the thought of your father throwing a plastic lizard! Wait 'til the Dominicans meet him!

  21. Lizard love, we used to have them around our house when I was young. Yours sound very tame and well fed. You do get a sense about an animal being a boy or girl don't you.

  22. Brrrr. They give me the heebie jeebies. They're just too prehistoric looking, and blue tongues-ick, F.R.E.A.K.Y. I suspect you are high on paint fumes!

  23. Your lizards look umm... nice. From this distance! I've just found a great little website with free retro designs - just what you need for making dollhouse wallpaper! Thought of your dollhouse the moment I found it :)
    tackorama.net - enjoy!

  24. we loved our "rose lizard" (named because he lived in the rose garden - so imaginative!) when we were kids... hope they continue to have fun in your yard, and not vomit too much!

  25. I had no idea that blue tongues had a 15 house radius..maybe ours has got lost in the yard 7 houses away..we don't see him very often nowadays!

  26. re your brown snake post? those leaves that your friendly lizards are frolicking in...great hidey hole for brown snakes, like a snake equivilent of mission beach or port douglas...not sure if lizards are a deterrent, but just a heads up...
