The Beach

In a further, obviously desperate attempt to keep Finnish K on the books, we took her to the beach.

We're always at the beach. All that sand blowing in our faces and the wind blowing our towels everywhere, and salty water with unknown, slimy creatures with razor-sharp teeth swimming in it. We can't get enough.

Look how adept Child Two is at walking on the sand.

That kind of litheness only comes from being constantly at the beach.

We all dress for the beach. Shoes, socks, tights, long pants etc.

That's a nappy ready to explode.

The waves weren't too big, but it was cold and gusty. Martha's mullet blew wildly in the wind.

Rudolph Nureyev was desperate for a swim. I said nicely, in my 'don't-horrify-the-Finnish-girl' voice, that "If you so much as think of getting your pants wet, brother, you're in big trouble."

So, imagine my horror when a single, freakish, tsunami-sized wave pushed him off his feet against his strongest attempts to resist its power?

He agreed to be stoic and stand in the wind to dry off.

At the beach, there's still the occasional 60s block of holiday units.

I admire their dogged resistance to big developers.

From this height, we saw a whale swimming very close to the shore, travelling north. It was very exciting.

They're cute. But they're noisy and they all scream ALL THE TIME. You can borrow them if you don't believe me.

  3. Oh too funny. We haven't been to the beach in ages. I'm afraid my gait would be similar to Child 2. Glad to hear that Finnish K is still around too! xx

  6. Nelly,
some of us have started sulking. And answering back! I told him that's not why I married him!

    Deb,
they're on their way! And they break things.

    Brismod,
the Beach. So close, but so far. There's always Southbank to practise your beach walk.

    Jennie,
it's about an hour away. You're getting excited aren't you?

    Zigsma,
do you think it's Frank Farina up there?

  7. Last week swimming at your beaches, yes my children in their clothes, accidentally falling in, as you do when you're in high school . . . we kept having people stop us & say "you must be Southerners" & i just use my shock excuse of "actually, they were all born in Darwin, they just have no temperature control when it comes to the beach or swimming opportunities" so i've confused PLENTY of your fellow Queenslanders with those 4 weird children of mine. I know them only too well that i have to take towels at all times & fresh dry knickers. Love Posie

  8. That last photo will be framed and placed on my credenza...I'll tell inquiring minds that they are my grandkids. Who'll know, and they're such a handsome bunch. Love Rudolf's stripey pants and Martha's about to explode nappy. I wish I were at the beach now instead of this hot and humid house.

  9. p.s. if you rent one of those 60's holiday units for me, I'll take the children. No more nanny worries. Any one of them, honestly, I'll do it. Let me know, packing my bags.

  10. I don't think I've ever laughed quite as hard while reading a blog post as I did at your description and picture of Child Two walking in the sand. What cute kids, and what a great post!

  11. I really like the photo of the 60's block of holiday units hanging in there. Don't those new ones look horrifying ... good view but I can't stand all the shadows they make. Hope you had some spare clothes. I'm surprised wet boy wasn't wearing his customary trilby hat?

  12. Haha, your family adventures are always a delight to read about ... perhaps experiencing them firsthand is quite something else? ;)

  15. I'm coming home and I'm going to be one of those odd folks on the beach. I've sold the idea of an Au Pair to Little Miss C on the basis that she is getting a big sister from the country that gave us Mamma Mia or as she says Mummy Mirror. See you soon MMC

  16. Ha-ha, I think I have enough with mine. My six year old and my four year old have been staying home for four weeks, and we haven't done anything, (except moving and having a baby) no traveling at all. They're a bit restless, to put it mildly. Tomorrow it's back to kindergarten and pre-school. Can't wait.

  17. Number two has the best stripey pants in town. The stoic drying photo is very funny.
Yell. I know it well. Better go, before the school bell.

  19. I'm borrowing your kids anytime. We could swap! I take your children and you take my eight cats. Or we could put them all together in a room, locked them up and run away for a few days!!
