Hello Liberty

I saw this, this morning ...

It's a marriage of Hello Kitty and Liberty of London.

A Hello Kitty Liberty range is due out later this month. You can read more from the source.

I'm not sure what to make of it. We're certainly fans of the Japanese moon-faced cat, but we're also dyed-in-the-wool advocates of traditional Liberty Tana Lawn. Torn.

I'm beginning to think that some of the traditional brands are becoming too commercialised. Think Marimekko and Converse, Missoni and Target, Liberty of London and Target.

Thoughts? Maybe I'm just being too hoity-toity because it's breakfast time.

  2. I'm not sure it works either. I think both are better separately. If it ain't broke...

  3. i agree... ( and its almst midnight here ) thats why i try , as much as i can to avoid brands. i buy handmade or used stuff from unkown creative people. i think the ones who don`t make too much noise ( if you know what i mean) are usually the ones with more talent...

  4. I think the second one you've shown here is very clever. But I agree with you on how these very old and traditional brands are sort of selling out.xx

  5. It seems as though the global economy is forcing a one-world product.
The first pattern you showed would make an excellent framed wall hanging.
But, the rest don't do it for me.
I would have thought these labels had 2 different markets. Possibly Japanese inspired?

  6. It's way past any normal bedtime here, and I agree with you too. I used to love Hello Kitty, now I avoid it like the plague. Like Demie, I too try to avoid certain brands.
(I had made such a long answer on your previous post, and then I pushed the wrong button. Argh! I do iron. Everything, all the time).

  7. I like em, it reduces the hello kitty tack quotient so it becomes simply cute again. The marimekko sneakers were a bust and they could have been so awesome x

  8. I think with this economy everyone is just trying to make a buck. And, I'll admit, I had never heard of Liberty of London until maybe 2 years ago and it was because of a collaboration with Target. I didn't buy anything mind you, but now I know who they are. Marketing Baby!

  9. It really doesn't bother me. A lot of those big companies are struggling to stay afloat at the moment so whatever keeps their people employed is okay. It's just pretty pictures and I like the old stuff anyway.

  10. They had quite a few HK items in Pink Karenkubo in Japan, I was mighty tempted by a handbag but restrained in the end.

I quite like the Kitty Town print and think it would make some great kids clothes.

I do wonder though if we would have a different opinion if lines such as Liberty for Target or Missoni for Target was available in our Target stores?

  11. Lilli,
I like Hello Kitty if she's on something red or navy blue. She seems to have merged into a lot of sickly pink or black, nowadays. I've even seen toasters and waffle-makers. Crazy.

    Max,
yes, I think it's the tack quotient that repels me from HK sometimes. Though I used to save my pocket money for months to buy into the Sanrio brand.

    Annie,
glad you're not bothered. I spend hours wrestling this sort of stuff.

    Helen,
I'd like to think I'd remain resolute and refuse to partake in the blatant desperation for a share in a manipulated classic on sale at Target. But it's breakfast time again and lack of coffee sees me a bit feisty.

Though, you're right about the Town print being kind-of cute.

  13. I used to love Hello Kitty in the 80s and early 90s when very few people knew it. Now It's everywhere and it doesn't bother me but it bores me.
I see cats everywhere I go, real ones, plastic ones...I began designing a cushion cover with a cat print for my shop, but before It was done it gave me an allergic reaction. I'm done with cats. Don't tell mine.

  14. I think it's ridiculous. These places are charging top dollar - think harder designers! (I'm grumpy tonight)

  15. dear,
i love to wear aprons and i hate ironing.
or, rather, i think ironing is over appreciated. then again, when i visit in sweden and my mother irons my dresses, and i look both neater and cleaner, i can only go WOOOOOOW!

  16. I admit I didn't know anything of Liberty of London before I saw it at Target.
Hello Kitty I loved as a kid, but when I see what they've done with it at Target I cringe. I do like the Liberty of London Hello Kitty collaboration, it's cute again. A friend who owns a very small business (misha lulu) was contacted by Hello Kitty also, they like that she is a small business, not too commercial, the line reminds me of this Liberty of London marriage...back to sweet. Forget the glitter and sequence.

  17. Breakfast time here---a very late breakfast, indeed---and the Hoity-Toity index is at an all time high. Not a marriage made in heaven, for sure...

  18. My daughter loved Hello Kitty back in the 80s, but I'm pretty much done with it. Like most things, it became boring to me when everybody decided it was precious and women in their 30s started getting Hello Kitty tattoos.
