Broken promises

This is me breaking two promises.

First broken promise: I'm doing a post. That was rude of me, out the the blue, to declare I was not blogging for what seemed like years. Sorry. I shouldn't have said anything, and just quietly scaled back the frequency of postings.*

But I thought you'd like to see our new haircut. We're working on our 'smile'.

Martha's hair is ungenetically 'ginger'. Sometimes I wonder what I'd do if the Hospital rang me and said, 'Sorry. We mixed up your baby. You have someone else's and they have yours'.

What would you do? I wouldn't give this kid up for anything.

We love our quilt. Here it is in action.

'Smile!'

I hated the quilt while I was sewing it, but my quilt mentor Melissa told me to press-on, because what may look like a hideous mess, would turn out to be something lovely when it was completed. She was right.

It's not perfect, but Martha loves it. And 'Moomin' is her new word. So it's backed with Moomin fabric, the front is eight-inch squares of vintage sheets, and the binding is a different Moomin fabric.

It is possibly the most satisfying thing I've ever sewed. What's nicest about it is that it's something I've made which Martha sleeps with and will keep her warm at night. She loves the fabric, and now I have to make a similar one for her elder sister - but I have to 'Vampire-it-up' for the nine-year-old because she's Australia's Youngest Emo.

My second broken promise relates to my signing of the International Agreement to Limit All International Internet Purchases and Unnecessary Domestic Purchases Generally.

Because on the weekend I bought an unnecessary small orange vase from Katherine of the OldBoatHouse. I love seeing Katherine at her (OB)House. She's always so friendly and she talks a lot.

I thought the little orange vase from Italy would fit in nicely here.

While I was at Katherine's I met a blog reader called 'Karen'. Everyone say, 'Hello Karen!'. She was lovely too ... I couldn't really talk to her because I was conscious that my four children were tearing-up Katherine's front garden.

And because we all need one ... I made the International Internet purchase that is a '60s patio dress.

It's what's called, in polite circles, a cracker!

There's not enough butterfly sleeves about, now-a-days. I'm picturing myself in three months, donning this little beauty and drinking some expensive fortified, liquified, bubbly grapes on the back deck/patio.

I love this ginger nut.

*Thank you for all your comments on the previous post. You're all very supportive and kind. Sometimes I get a bit berserk and am not afraid to throw a whole-scale 'knee-jerk reaction'. I think 'knee-jerk reaction' is an apt description of my swearing not to blog until I'd bought a new house, which will be sometime in the next Mid-Century. So, thank you for understanding my knee-jerk backflip.

  1. Your ginger nut is the cutest - loving that quilt too. Good luck for ongoing frugality on internet purchases - looks like you need any help you can get on that front!

I am also in love with Martha's Kaftan and (cough, splutter) the Patio dress!!!! Oh-my-Lordy!!! That is quite possibly the best dress I have ever ever seen. How old do you think it is?

  6. I love happy winking Martha & both your cracker floral numbers.Bravo - that quilt is a Moomin Marvel, and love the vintage sheets. You've excelled (good mentoring Melissa. Martha has wonderful hair. My little girl has strawberry blonde hair which used to be very ginger and I love it. Genetics are a curious thing! Speaking of orange; lovely vase, and hello Katherine, and hello reader Karen!
Don't worry I feel like selling the reno, buying a Winnebago and taking off on a regular basis.

  7. Ah, the old knee jerk backflip. I think that may be a sport in the 2012 Olympics. You'd be a shoe-in for the team. Loving that patio dress. I do hope you have a suitable patio for it :)

  9. YAY! You're back! Didn't leave a comment on the last post. I was "snobbing you off' (I love that high school term) because I was cranky you were leaving us. Shallow of me, I know ;-) But hey, the silent treatment worked (or at least let me think the silent treatment worked). Here's to many more posts on Moomins, loud dresses, Horsey & all things Mid-Century! Bugger the study!

  10. Oh hurrah!! You're back. I'm really pleased your resolve weakened.
I love all your purchases, specially the marvellous dress. Both my kids have red/strawberry blond hair and we think it's a grandfather on one side meeting a great-grandfather on the other -- those genes just hang around waiting for an excuse to gang up.
    Really glad you're back.

And oh, the ginger girl doesnt cant get any cuter with that smile!! The quilt is also beautiful! I have a half finished quilt of vintage sheets at home...I vow to finish and see it in action as well. Making quilts for loved ones gets addicting. A handmade gift that provides warmth! The best!

  13. whats the harm in a little post here and there?
it'll help offset the accumulation of data thats brimming in your brain.

  16. I'm so happy you're back! Lovely vase, great patio dress, fab quilt and cute ginger nut! Now don't you quit on us again so dramatically. Scaling back is much gentler on us. And don't you just love Katherine - the best stuff in Brisbane without a doubt. xx

  17. Hahaha, Carmel,
you're back ... never really gone I think. Maybe for a day...At that time you've done a big job with sewing the beautiful quilt for cute Ginger-Martha. So you finished and come back, yuhuh!
You are right: Maybe next time if you need a short break, before you'll burn out, you just quietly scale back the frequency of your postings. So I don't have to buy so much new tissues...
    Love
    Ariane.

  19. Hooray for backflips!!!!!
Your quilt looks fab and yes, that ensemble is a major cracker! I love your little ceramic collection, very funky. I tell you what, if I didn't have a Federation home, I'd be fighting you for a MC one.
ps When you get it, I have a friend who makes fabulous MC inspired handprinted fabrics that would look fab as furnishings. If you look for Penny Malone on my blog you'll see the piece I have :)
