Blog Lock Down

For a while I've been thinking of various excuses to stop this blog ...
  • I feel I'm writing drivel;
  • It's getting slowly bigger, and I feel like I'm losing control of it;
  • I know there are 'lurkers', and lurkers irritate me; and
  • It's so dark here and I can't take a decent photo.
 I'm reading my way through this pile of books ... I read the front one yesterday. Who's read it? What an awfully tragic book. I couldn't put it down. And then lay awake all night thinking about young boys at war!
    But then I think of all I get from the blog ...
    • I can create bullet-point lists;
    • I've met wonderful people and I enjoy the friendships I've made through the blog. I'm sure they're are a lot more people to meet;
    • I love the comments and the banter it promotes;
    • It gives me an outlet which I didn't realise I needed until I started writing again;
    • It allows me to carry-on about Mid-Century design and brag about the inherited under-achievements of my children.
    The conflict!

    On one hand, to me it is very personal; I put my funny-looking children, my modest home and my crazy life on it, so to have people regularly read it, without them actually making themselves known, irritates me.

    On the other hand, it scares me to think that a post I did on Wodehouse's Carry On, Jeeves, can end up as a book review on the Indian-equivalent of Amazon.

    But realists will tell me that's part-and-parcel of a public blog ... which is why I'm thinking I'll make it 'private' with a known-list of limited readers. For a while, anyway, until I can get a grip on it again.

    That way, I may feel more comfortable with what I put on it, and I'll know who's seeing, for example, photos of Martha with toast squashed into her nappy-enclosed bottom-end.

    Because the bigger the blog gets, the more responsible I feel towards, and protective of, my children. And I also feel responsible to you readers, the ones I'm aware of, to write interesting stuff and not get hung-up about what I've written and who's reading it.

    So, here's the rub. If you really want to continue reading, you'll need to put your hand up and send me your Google account email address to (makeminemidcentury@gmail.com), so I can add it to the list of Readers before I shut the 'cyber door'.

    Just because you're following or subscribed now, does not mean you'll be able to read the private blog.

    It's as if I'm starting from scratch.

    If you want to know more, you can read this link

    I'll change it over in the next week or so, and I may make it public again, I don't know. I just think I'll feel better about it if I lock-it-down for a bit.

    Fin.

    3. I feel as if I am about to ask some fancy DJ if I can get my name put on the door for her show! I can totally understand your antilurkerness, especially with the family on display and lots and lots of followers! I have maybe 10 people out of 55 followers who comment so I'm imagining your ratio is a lot higher.

      Oh, and I haven't read that book and by the sounds of it I may not, staying away from depressingness at the moment, but I would love to hear what you think of A Little Book of Language - that sounds interesting.

      PS. I am yet to find any drivel on this blog.

    6. My new flat is driving me mad with the lack of good light .. I used to take decent photos but can't really anymore.

      It also annoys me I don't live somewhere cool like Seattle or NYC or Melbourne - Brisbane's nice and all but not really a lot of photo opportunities to show off - we don't even have proper seasons :(:(

      Still, I enjoy my blog for the most part and hope you stick around!

    7. I hope you don't abandon your blog...

      You do what you have to do to be comfortable with how you express yourself on your blog. Most bloggers would totally understand.

      I personally don't mind lurkers, as I occasionally lurk myself. It would be impossible to comment and follow everyone...

      Anyway, I've sent my gmail address to you...will I make the cut??

    12. I'm with you, and understand every single reason for your thoughts; it's a lot easier with 'Three Readers'. I've even read the book, but not in one day (how can you manage that?). And there is a movie. Yes, first world war is considered the worst ever; humanities first meeting with industrial warfare.

      I hereby apply to continue the journey of 'the inherited under-achievements of my children'. Really!!! You have my adress. And may I suggest that you change the link to my blog and even consider a new section: 'Scandinavians who annoy me' :)))

    16. I totally understand how you must be feeling and the uneasiness of being fully open.
      I have heard enough about net weirdos to share your feelings for protecting your privacy and that of your family, and indeed, your readers, commenting or not.
      I could never do what you have done so successfully.
      But I believe you are born to write .
      This blog has been a revelation to me on many levels - all good really.
      So, I agree with your attempt to control this space from being overlooked by people unknown.
      However, I do so enjoy ,not only your blog, but the love and the wit of your commenting blogging friends.
      It's like being part of a close but diverse family.
      Please keep me in mind when you undergo your changes.
      May 2011 bring a pox to all ill-intentioned lurkers.

    17. Oh, and PS.
      Your photos are fine.
      I think the light's adequate.

    18. I really do get what you mean about about the privacy issues. I struggle with it a bit myself, but do you know, for me it's more stressful not telling my bloggy friends about stuff but the fact that my real life friends read it and know what's going on, but NEVER leave me a comment about it. Frustrating. I often stop posting about things because of them. Weird.
      I just love your blog, I revel in the humour, wit and intelligence of it. I'll be eailling you my email so hopefully I can continue to read :)

    19. Oh, Carmel, I *get* what you're feeling. It is such a dilemma. I would love to keep following you but I don't have a gmail account (only jane1970@live.com.au) - is that fatal for me?! J x

    20. I agree with everyone. You're like a regular shot in the arm of much needed humour! I've not read this book. Currently working my way through the 44 Scotland Street series by Alexander McCall Smith. Easy peasy and I love the child prodigy Bertie. Have you read them? You have my email, so please keep me on your list!

    21. Dear mmmc, I don,t do a personal blog so i guess I have a different experience but your blog is such a happy positive blog that it can only be a good thing for all to read. Your views are common sense and from the heart and although you blog about your family you are very respectful of your children and family. So I guess what I am saying is I hope you continue. I will attempt to send my details and await to see if I am a chosen one, ha xx Katherine oh and happy new year

    22. Just wanted to let you know that I love your blog and the way you write.
      I understand about the privacy thing especially when you have young children and want to post about them.
      Your intelligence shines in your blog as does you wicked sense of humour.
      Don't have a gmail account but would love to still follow you.
      Cheers, Pam x

    24. You're all so delightful having agreed to my paranoia.

      I've added you all ... you could be a family pet being forced to type an email account, and I've added you.

    27. This is weird, and getting weirder. I've also decided to close down one blog and restart another devoted mainly to vintage. And I've now discovered another blogger I have just started following has decided to open a second string blog for people finding the first one too annoying or serious(?)Anyway I've emailed you. Don't stop being funny - we love you the way you are MMMC!

    28. whooo hooo ! I just got your 'invitation to join' log in thingy from Google. Thank you♥ keep up the good work. I thought I'd found some great vintage fabric today, but it was 2004 Repro-retro stuff (on my Shopping blog!). Was very cute tho, so I brought it home.

      I'm IN!!!
      Makes me feel legitimate.
      But, I know I'll forget which name/address/password I have just submitted to get to here, let alone the ability to find and enter this exclusive blog again.
      So, I'd better say "Hi-Ho" and hope for the best.
