Books

The last of the Moomin book order arrived today ...

Two came under the rain coat of an Australian Post courier ... crisp, dry, undamaged ... and delivered with a smile.

The third one was jammed into the mail box, wet and bent.

Oh well, all things in perspective.

The colours and illustrations in the Toffle book are beautiful ... the children pounced on them like little Fillyjonks and Mymbles.

I can't tell you how much we're smitten with these books ... they're funny, and poignant and crazily human.

There are so many characters and I find myself laughing out loud and marvelling at the myriad of expressions.

Depending on who's handling them, books generally get a fair run in our house ... but not in Child 2 & 3's room ... where they are pulled from the shelves and scattered like dud TAB tickets all over the floor for people to walk all over.

So, I moved them out of their easy reach in order to prolong their life for the last child.

Neat.

I used this book to create the culinary masterpiece that was dinner - a 70s fiesta of meatloaf, cauliflower cheese and Vichy carrots ... not one of those dishes photo well, so you'll have to use your imagination.

But, let me tell you - Fab!

  1. Firstly cauliflower cheese.....yum! Secondly re your last post, please keep blog the same. Maybe the solution is a second blog. Now more importantly have you got all the books ready for school etc?

  2. You could have made more of an effort with the book tidy-up? Spine colour coordination and blocking? 7/10 for OCD-ness. However, 10/10 for comfort food in the form of cauliflower cheese. I make it for an afternoon snack. We only have a lift-the-flap Moomin - time to step it up. So colourful and folksy.

Hmm, you moved the books out of easy reach...that I'm doing wrong! I'll do same as you, thank you for the hint.
    Delicious dinner, by the way!
    Big hugs,

  7. Aren't postmen terrific? Our regular one will sign and push through the letter box small recorded delivery packets if we're out to save us having to go to the sorting office to collect. They all know with which neighbour to leave larger parcels if we're not in. I'm thinking about Moomin books as they ring a faint bell from many years ago. I love the graphics but can't remember the stories. Shall have to explore as they may be just the job for my grandchildren (now I've got two!). I am already searching for "Hello Baby". Thank you!Cx

  8. I love cauliflower (maybe it's growing next to the beans as we speak...hope not).

There is someone here, same hair colour as My, who's very careless with her books; they often misses a page or more. She just shakes her head, turns her palms up and says: 'Oh noooooo....' with a very sad face. If she really was My, she'd say: 'Mind your own business'.

  9. So the title of the cook book was not wrong. I could go for some retro food. And I agree with Katherine too, please don't change. xx

  10. i want to comfort Toffle. Poor Toffle.

I am terible with my books. I fall asleep reading so i sleep with my books. the morning after they look...different. Or in summer i tend to drawn them in the pool. I sunbathe while reading on the raft, but then i fall asleep and the book...plops in the water. last summer i had to buy 'A time to kill' three times.

  11. TAB tickets is a great reference. I relate! Quite partial to the cauliflower cheese; often do a blend with broccoli too.

  12. Katherine,
you know, maybe the solution is a second blog! Wise woman ... though I think someone else has mentioned it, but I didn't really consider it.

    Zigsma,
it'd be a wise investment in the 'older' Moomin books ... but I'd stop purchasing and start packing if I were you.

    Deb,
you say 'supper' we say 'dinner'.

    Heidi,
my kids didn't eat the meatloaf either ... I'll send you the recipe though. It was scrumptious ... in fact I just had some more for luncheon.

    Ariane,
I really didn't want to move the books out of the boys' reach ... but Child 3 was trashing them ... so it's one-at-a-time now rather than a whole shelf-at-a-time.

    Sara,
why do I think you live in Paris?

Ms EleganceVintage, I'd love to suggest book-after-book for your grandchildren. There are so many beautiful ones now! You need to come out to Australia quick, so you can read some to them before they get too old.

Lilli, no one planted the cauliflower ... I think the novelty of planting cooked vegetables wore off. Laughed about 'Little My' ... 'Oh Noooo', it's as if someone but her has pulled out the pages!

    Brismod,
there's a fabulous recipe for prawn cocktails which would be delicious consumed on your deck (maybe with some of those Buddha-ish beers)!

    Bobbi,
why does that not surprise me? I just remembered your shop!

    Sonia,
Broccoli! Yum. Spent years working part-time at the TAB. I hate horse racing.
