She's not crafty. She's just cheap.

You heard it. I'm not crafty. I'm just cheap.

Occasionally, I'll buy overly-expensive children's clothing from this store, just so I can get the worthless little cotton strings on the price tags.

I collect them for many years ... like an obsessive-compulsive hoarder ... until I have a pile like this ...

Then, I buy a little book of hard paper - some people call it cardboard - and I punch holes in the corner and I loop through the expensive pieces of string.

After that mind-bending activity, I stamp my little heart out. Doesn't take any creativity at all.

And then, when I saw this post on curbside style's blog ... I unapologetically stole the idea ... and made a Christmas wreath from an old bamboo ring that was kicking around the place, and lots of pieces of fabric.

That's not being crafty. That's just being a cheap copy cat.

  1. Still crafty in my books. So are you going into business with those tags? Like the wreath. Imitation is the best form of flattery. Crafty can imitate. Resourceful not cheap. Am I projecting my justifications?

  2. Isn't that what it is all about. Each copy is a little different until it morphs into something unique. I like that wreath I think I may have to copy it too!

  3. I like your craft-project! Those tags are nice. (Still jealous of those stamps). I have some strings myself. I got some from a neighbor/friend the other day. She was on her way to throw away some thrash. I asked if I could have the string... a completely sane thing to do :)
    Enjoy your thursday. Lena :)

  4. I think it's very eco of you. Think how you've recycled all those bits of string to make brand new tags and those useless bits of fabric into a lovely wreath. Your Eames stamps are very cool. xx

  9. I say everyone gets their ideas from someone or somewhere. That's the beauty of sharing the love. Great project!

  10. I can't believe how much people spend on greeting cards from the newsagent! $5 or $6!

All when they could make tags like yours.

Luckily I have passed on my cheapness to the kids and they now know not to ask when they have to give a gift. Nup, they'll be making one! (Or buying one directly from the artist - that's when it's ok!)

Here's cheers to you being cheap, yet organised enough to find the strings when you need them. Impressive.

  11. Oh love the Seed string, i totally ToTALLY understand you. I shop in their sales, only way to dress 4 children gorgeously on a budget. Alas, they are all too old for Seed now, sigh. My son (baby aged 7) is still getting around in their shorts though. I'll save you the string if we do venture back in there. Super sweet tags, not cheap, it's creative & handmade, perfection!! Love Posie

  12. R&S, you're pretty crafty. Actually, you're pretty handy re wood and glue etc.

    The Moerks,
Hello. You're new. I'd like to see your copy of my copy.

Lena, you're super crafty. There's a plethora of your paper Christmassy thing which I'm mulling over in my head.

Brismod, when you put all those casement windows in, I'll give you an Eames stamp on your hand!

Nessaknits, tell us when you copy the copy, too. Poor curbsidestyle.

    Megan,
you should start a string collection; however you'd have to have lots of children first so that you have to buy the clothes in order to get the string etc.

Wendy, I bet you have a few copy cats in your brood.

Deb, I'll send you string and you'll see how satisfying it is having a collection of such.

    Joni, you're very diplomatic!

Anna, yes cards are stupidly expensive. I generally keep the ones I get - but lots of people just throw them away.

    PP,
you gotta love hand-me-downs ... it economically rationalises the existence of multiple children in one family. Sometimes.

  13. It looks great! and as French filmer Jean-Luc Godard said: Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from — it’s where you take them to.” and you've done a great job!
