Dresdner Elephant etc

This is a Dresdner Bank elephant money box.

They were designed by German designer Luigi Colani for the Dresdner Bank in the 60s. I've read they were given away to customers on opening bank accounts.

They are very collectible.

This set is priced at $270USD. Unfortunately, I don't have a Dresden Bank money box. More's the pity.

I love them ... Konfettiform has a memory like an elephant because when I asked her a vague question about these colourful elephant money boxes, she knew exactly what I was talking about and referred me straight to one!

I sewed some stress-relieving place mats this afternoon. There's nothing more satisfying than putting your foot on a sewing machine pedal and sewing simple straight lines, very quickly.

These are pretty-basic place mats  - a piece of Ikea fabric cut into quarters and then I sewed around the edges so they'll fray.

I'm not feeding the Queen, you know. And, for me, there's an extremely fine line between sewing something simple or, not being stuffed with all the drama, and just buying what ever it was I was contemplating sewing.

Shouldn't I have been somewhere today?

PS I'm trying hard to remember to draw the present draw-thing tomorrow. I still don't know what it'll be.
I'm really pre-occupied until this time next week.

  4. I visit you, and I realise there are things that I didn't even know about that I really, really need (like those elephants...) hope you have a good week...

  5. Sew good to see you have not let the dust settle on the Bernina. I want try that fringe thing out. I may need instruction so will wait a week. Do you think I could do it with the kids school uniforms to avoid the dreaded hemming?

  6. Zigsma, that will be my mantra.

Megan, your ironic, though practical, suggestion is very amusing!

Brismod, thank you! You never fail to say something nice. I think everyine has to go to your blog and look at your new chair. And, yes, you often see those elephants on shelves in Interiors magazines spreads ... so I could describe them, but never knew their history.

Catherine, don't those elephants have that effect!? Curse the cute little money containers.

    R3,
great idea about the school uniform ... bringin' Waikiki to the western suburbs! You won't need instruction!

  7. Oh look, your nerves... my nerves look a bit like that too, after being trapped inside all weekend with a Nerd computer game playing Husband, two kids and a half wit Labrador puppy.

  8. The elephant box thingys are very nice. I like their shape. I love the placemats, sewing is a great stress reliever for you I guess, for me it is just the opposite. I'll be thinking of you all week.
p.s. Are the lollies all gone yet?

  9. Okay, that's just creepy. I set about making cloth napkins (out of Oxford shirts! Thanks, Martha...) this morning. Separated at birth?

  10. Am I projecting or did the Commonwealth bank give away plastic elephant money boxes in the 70's. I think they replaced the tin model bank ones.
Horsey was nowhere to be found in the sweeps yesterday. Did you and he both wag the Mad, Muddy, Melbourne Cup, MMMC? M and I stayed home with a couple of mates who brought champagne and laughed at the hats with us.

  11. Oh Horsey, that'd be right. MMM-C goes all Elephant-ey when of all days it should have been about you. Neigh. They are lovely elephants though, and great colours.

  12. Estelle,
what a weekend! I hope everyone's managed to get outside now. It rains a bit down there, doens't it?

    Deb,
    all gone. Husband ate them.

    Wendy,
I'd love to see your cloth napkins.

    Annie,
the CBA did have plastic elephants. Copy cats. I was invited to a Melbourne Cup lunch, but bowed out to study instead. Sad.

    R&S,
thank you for reminding me of Horsey yesterday! Sometimes the bleeding obvious ...

  13. Nice elephant banks! You know, I could send some work your way if you want to continue sewing for stress relief. :) Hey saw this today & thought of an earlier post of yours... http://www.ohdeedoh.com/ohdeedoh/wooden-christmas-trees-131305?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+apartmenttherapy%2Fohdeedoh+%28Ohdeedoh%29

  14. For a moment there I thought the Dresdner Bank elephant money box was the prize in your giveaway :))) (Not really, but I can't think of anything to say about the elephants. More than that they are nice, specially if they are filled with money). I was obsessed with making placemats some time during my childhood. Only problem was that I didn't sew...

  15. Ah, hello Horsey. I told my husband about Horsey's adventure at the library and he got a great chuckle. Good to see he's doing well :)

I love to sew - so much more satisfying than doing laundry and dishes :)

Adorable elephants too - I hadn't seen these before

  16. KLT,
I saw that post too and sighed.

    Lilli,
I would have loved to be able to give away a Dresdner money box. Maybe one day I will!

    HHUK,
You'll see those elephants everywhere now! There are a lot in England.
