Waiting for Buffet

I like posts like this ... where I bring some Mid-Century magic to an otherwise ho-hum suburban life.

Yesterday, I waited patiently for the new buffet to arrive, en ute. It's to replace the 'rustic Spanish' one below which my parents are missing.

I moved a couch ... maternal adrenalin saw me lift it myself. From one room to another.
Through some other rooms.

We're running out of space, so said couch is now in the main bedroom. Incongruity is an element of my life which I can't shake.

I wiped skirting boards ... this is my favourite domestic product.

I buy three-at-a-time. Apart from Mortein, I don't like spraying stuff around, so these wipes are fabulous. Of course, I should be concocting a potion of baking soda and soda water or something, but I couldn't be bothered.

Then I decided to Sugar Soap the walls, as instructed by my Law notes on 'Minority Shareholder Rights' which said something like: "Where members' resolutions are oppressive, unfairly prejudicial or unfairly discriminatory to a minority of members, MMMC maybe you could wash the walls which will be hidden by the buffet".

It was hot yesterday. Child 4 gawked at the neighbours. Her nappy looks embarrassingly full.

And then we waited ... we took Child 2 to his hearing test. I was told he hears as much as he would if he had his fingers in his ears ... fortunately his ears are fixable, so I'm relieved.

Then this arrived ... of course I couldn't help myself but move everything immediately from a squished display cabinet into its cavernous, sumptuous beauty!

It's in very good, solid condition. I think it will get along nicely with everyone and everything. Washing came out to say 'Hi' ... but you're sick of seeing Washing so I didn't photograph his bits.

Those shelves all slide out. They are very snazzy and are lined with green felt.

This is the cocktail-making side. The children haven't taken to cocktails yet, so I'll just keep this stuff there until they're ready.

That was close! With her walking contraption, this Child is a veritable speed train.

I was gazing at Buffet all evening, again as suggested by a textbook on Legal Ethics: "Competence in legal practice, however, requires not only the satisfactory completion of the academic and practical training requirements raise your eyes MMMC and look in the direction of the new Buffet" ...

And polished it with this today ...

I have always like polishing furniture ... I used to use O'Cedar polish, but heard that wasn't very good for wood, ironically, terrible for cedar. I also polished some chairs, which drank it up.

Thank you Grandad and Grandma. Thank you Mr C for use of ute.

Now, all the sewing stuff can go in here ... It's innards can be wallpapered in vintage Danish wallpaper, and I don't think anyone will mind. I also ponder whether I could replace the glass panels ... I've never understood their beer-bottle colour.

At one point I must have thought I was running low on fluorescent stationery products. Child 2 counted 18 highlighters.

ADDENDUM: This is a post on Design Sponge for Refreshening Wood ... if anyone's interested.

  1. Isn't it funny how something new and beautiful can make you go all clean and orderly. Everything looks splendid in the belly of the beast as she stands, most dainty, on her tippy toes. It is a fitting poultice for the wound that was the casserole affair.

I always loved oiling Mum's Parker stuff out west where the desert air was known to dry out teak and damage it. Will try the orange oil.

Is there a drawer for the highlighters?

  2. Glad Child 2 is fixable. Change that poor baby's nappies! Love Buffet and contents. What, pray tell is sugar soap?! I don't make my own cleaning stuff either and I think you need some more highlighters.
    Carry on.

  3. Annie,
That Paddington Antiques place has lots of orange oil. It's a bit expensive, and the Husband's knees went weak when he forked over the $18 for small bottle, but the man said 'a tiny bit goes a long way'. And it did/does!

    Deb,
'Sugar Soap' is a liquid cleaner used to clean walls before painting them. It could do other stuff, but I haven't read the back of the bottle. It is quite effective. Tiddly-pip!

  4. I had no idea OCedar was bad for cedar. That's insane!!!
We have the same disposable wipe obsession - except that I'm lazy and just substitute baby wipes. They're great in the kitchen.

  6. CP, now I'm questioning my statement on O-Cedar polish. I can't remember where I heard it. They'll sue me now.

BM, thank you. It's really all second-hand junk if I was going to be honest!

  7. Hilarious - my uni notes used to speak to me like that too! It is ABsolutely beautiful - and so artfully arranged. I'd be staring too. Highlighters make you feel organised, no? And those stick it notes - extra extra organised. They're extremely useful. Good luck with the study. Yes. Study.

  8. Hey, that looks absolutely fabolous! And - you have beautiful walls, and floors, and... everything! Love how Child 4 is spying on your neighbours, and I'm kind of jealous on her outfit. "Sugar Soap the walls"; what's that really about? I'm learning so much from you, picking up new words every time I visit. This time: "en ute" :))) Congratulations!

  9. P.S. I am a little surprised not to see the steins of the world from Grandad- land snugly ensconced in the Chiswell of Honour. I guess they're behind the beer bottle glass!

  10. What an eyeful of MCM goodness. The buffet is beautiful. I am also admiring the chairs and the couch and your wood floors..and child4's red tennies and chubby legs. Thanks for the tip on the orange oil. I have never really owned "nice" furniture until my teak lovelies found their way into our home. Now I feel like I can't put my feet on the coffee table and I have to polish with something other than a damp cloth. It's all about upkeep now, isn't it? Orange oil it is.

  11. Zigsma,
I was told once that highlighters equate with synapse activity ... thus, the more highlighters you have, the smarter you are.

Lilli, I'll explain a few things. Bare with me. I love the cultural divide!

AA, beer steins are in a growing box of items which are going to provide us with an ebay windfall.

    Who am I kidding?

    MCMadam,
hello. Hope you've been well. Wood floors are everywhere in Queensland. I may explain that soon. The orange oil is fabulous. Smells much nicer than O'Cedar oil, and you only need a drop. Did you read the post's addendum re polishing wood? I do admire your 'new'teak furniture ... I like furniture with history and a story, which is what yours has, in addition to just being bloody gorgeous to look at!
