Bringin' Mid-Century back

We did two things this weekend that we've never done as a family. Never. Together. In the one place. At the one time.

First, we all went to dinner! We went to the Paddington Barracks. To a place called FAB - Fish and Burgers. We wanted to go somewhere casual to 'test-drive' the six of us eating in public.

To be honest, we won't go back. The Paddington Barracks is really an overrated transit terminal.

And we were the only ones in the 'restaurant' ... which is really just a whole lot of plastic chairs in a mall ... and the staff spent the entire time we were there, sitting at the bar staring at us! Really! Don't know why.

Could've been because we kept asking them for complicated things such as serviettes or spoons; or the fact the Child 2 spilled his drink everywhere; or that we were all so darn cute. I don't know. Maybe they were willing us ...  telepathically ... to leave.

So then we had ice-cream. A female customer in the ice-cream shop said to me, "You must be busy with four boys!" I said, "I am busy, but only two of them are boys." And then she looked at me with a quizzical expression, and I then pointed out which ones were the girls. I thought, her cerebrum's going to have some problems when it comes to choosing her ice-cream flavour ...

Then I questioned the fact I don't deck my girl-childs in pink. Or the fact I, earlier that day, let Child One get her hair cut short. Are Child 1 and 4 that ugly they look like boys and the only thing that will define them is a pink ensemble?

So, to make myself feel better, I said, "Let's all pretend we're in New York watching the traffic and the subway."

Moving along ... the next day we then went vintage furniture shopping. Yes! The first time all together ... I wasn't looking forward to it. But, to Woolloongabba we headed.

Grandad reads the blog.

Everyone say, "Hello, Grandad!" Seems that he and Grandma have turned all nostalgic for the Spanish buffet we cleaned, so they want it back. So, it is not destined to be slapped with gloss 70s-orange. Anyway, to soften the blow of losing the buffet, Grandad offered to replace it with something more my taste.

Three cheers for Grandad and Grandma!

That's why we raced out to find something suitable before Grandad changed his mind ... or he forgot he made the offer.

This is a set of Arne Norell safari chairs for about $5000. They were owned by an international pilot who would flat-pack them and bring them all over the world to wherever he was living.

The people in the store recognised me because I look like my brother whom they know, and I caused them some irritation when I bought some chairs off them in the past ...

I said to the owners I'd buy the safari chairs when I get a job. I hope they don't 'hold' them for me ... because the job's sometime off. Though Child 2 paid me 15c today because he acknowledged I don't get weekends or public holidays.

Despite my reputation as an annoying customer, the owners were very friendly and I like them.

An original Grant Featherstone chair with original upholstery for $2450.

We didn't last long in the Woolloongabba retro-furniture precinct.

LOOK! Bjorn Wiinblad poster in Brisbane! The Husband saw it! $450 ... I had to keep walking! I'm not sure if I should regret my non-purchase. It was framed stupidly.

I got sick of refusing to buy small plastic toy forklifts for $45, or crocheted tigers for $45, or Bobbleheads for $35.

So we decided to leave when everyone, except me and the Husband, started crying.

Or the shoelaces needed tying on the sulking, boyish-looking person whose birthday it was yesterday.

  1. Brave. Very brave. We rarely eat out all together.

So did you find something suitable??? I'll keep my eyes peeled for you if you didn't.

  2. Oh no, I can't believe I missed it. When I read your Thursday post, I thought it was Friday and that the birthday was today (!!!) That's what happens when you want to be the first to congratulate - you end up being the last. HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!! <--- just pretending it's still Friday here :)

  3. Brismod,
I bought the Chiswell thing in the photo. The owners didn't like me referring to it as a 'thing'. It's more cocktail cabinet, so I think I'll be shuffling a few items around when it arrives 'en ute' next weekend.

  4. Lilli,
I am clapping my hands with laughter (like a performing seal)! I just showed Child One your message and she was very excited! Despite the fact she should be in bed, we're going to look a time-translater thing to see what time it is in Norway. She says she knows Norway!

  5. The only places we go to eat as a family are those big crazy yum cha houses full of Chinese ex patriots yelling at each other and getting into fights over the steamer cart for the best dumplings. It's so noisy you don't stand out, the kids can make all the mess they like and no one notices if your three year old whips off her dress and runs around the table with a chicken foot in one hand and a Thermos of green tea in the other.

  6. Estelle,
It's either really late at night or I've had too much of the house vino, but I'm laughing myself stupid at your Yum Cha image. I think we may try the local Bowls Club next. I'm likely to join the fight at the Chinese establishment. I soy can't help myself.

  7. I'd love to come on an outing with your little family! Have you seen 9 By Design on Foxtel? I think you'd lpve it.

  8. What a beautiful family!
Yum Cha is one of our fave's too. The no waiting, mid-morning time slot, no mess or noise care factor makes it perfect family fare. Not to mention who doesn't love the rainbow jelly and mango pancakes?!
I think number 1 girl is groovy and gorgeous - she could walk the streets of NY city with cool aplomb. I'm hoping my girl outgrows her colour prejudice (pink is her thing), and expands her horizons.
Lovely cocktail thingy cupboard. Look forward to seeing it in your home.

  9. Ah ha! I noticed that single glass of vino at the restaurant. Your girls are so cute they don't need to wear pink if they don't want to. Does grandpa read my blog? He can send me anything for a trade!
Oh, I forgot, love the free range kids photo. Aren't you the brave one!
    Yours in pioneering,

  10. Me again. I forgot to mention Mr MMMC is a cutie!

  11. Oh love this post! But must go to bed because I have to be up and out by 6.30am tomorrow to drive to London to take part in an antiques fair. Lots of Qs. Which child is wearing the stylish checked trilby? Is that Mr MMMC in the glasses? Send me Child4 and chip NOW. Leave the girl Childs alone. My girls loved boyish toys and strangers always assumed they were boys. My (only) very pretty redheaded boy was much admired by the local gypsies and I was terrified they wld steal him. We still love going out for dinner together (sadly minus Child 2 who lives in Oz)and their table manners are much better these days, if it's any consolation.

  12. Ah, we have not done that yet, the eating out thing. Still scarred by previous attempts (when 4 were 3) at Sizzler when the dessert buffet was plundered by my disgusting and epicurally creative brood. Not good. It's sad, but it seems my family suit more of a foodcourt environment. Yuck.
Child 1 looks a little bit Bowie with the new do, but I love it. My girls end up in pink far too often. We have many handmedowns to work our way through.
Just googled images for Bjorn W - and see he's your plate man. Lovely. ANd you're right, there's no excuse for stupid framing.

  13. Hello Grandad! Don't we love Grandad! The Chiswell thing is yours? Big enough to lock the children in? To continue the Grimm Bros thing... Your children all look pretty gorgeous to me.

  14. Love your Chiswell thingy - I went through a stage of stalking those on ebay. That Featherston is still there? I don't have kids but we tend to go out to dinner as a family with lots of them - we've experienced the staring.

  15. So many responses ...

    Ms CurlyPops,
I haven't seen that show. We don't have Foxtel ... just one more thing to master. I'll google the show though.

    R&S,
Thank you for your compliments! Yum Cha is looking like the thing to try!

    Deb,
I'll get Grandad to look at your blog ... I think he'd like it actually. And I relayed your thoughts on the Husband to the Husband and he said you made his day, and he thinks I should start splashing more photos of him about the Internet!

    Ms EM,
Child 2 wears the trilby - only takes it off to go to bed. It's still remarkably clean. That is the Husbandin the glasses. I'm presently covering Child 4 in Air Mail stamps.

    Anna,
yes, this poster was framed so that I'd have to rip it out and get it completely reframed ... shame. I think Sizzler is great because there's always one family who looks worse than yours. We went once, years ago ... with Grandad!

    Zigsma,
thank you ... the Chiswell thing is largish to the point where I'm wondering where it'll fit.

    Julie,
I think people stare because of the numbers ... maybe they're counting heads? And the Featherstone was there the whole time we were! It needs a re-upholster.

  16. Trust me putting girls in pink doesn't make people think they are girls. Picture this Singapore airport, nervous mum bringing her precious little girl home for the first time. Airport cleaner takes a shine to said mum's 6 month old baby girl dressed head to toe in pink. More locals gather to look at the blondish, blue eyed bundle - coos, ahs, more coos more ahs. Mother is feeling pretty pleased with herself until said cleaner says: "Boy?", mother replies "No no girl" (still basking in all the coos), cleaner; "Looks like boy?"

Mother takes child and makes a dash for the plane. So take it from seasoned pro pink has no effect on the foolish.
