Who are you calling a moron?
Nothing irritates me quite as much as having half an avocado go orf in the fridge.
Then I saw an article on Apartment Therapy stating that if you keep an avocado in an airtight container with a chopped onion, it'll stay fresh for days.
It does! For you Readers, I risked it. Child 4 loved it!
The article is here ... click here for the article. It explains why avocados go brown so quickly, and how a chopped onion stops that crazy, complicated, culinary chemical reaction!
I won't go into it ... too complicated for me.
Will give it a whirl, cheers katherine
ReplyDeleteSister Katherine,
ReplyDeleteit works. Gobsmacked, was I. (You could ebay a half-cut avocado and by the time the auction's up, it'll still be green!)
Yours in extrapolating-out the life of fruits,
Genius (whoever discovered the trick) :)
ReplyDeleteI think I had heard this years ago... never retained it...but for you to tell me it actualy works has got me very pleased. I going to give it a go. I hate wasting avos.
ReplyDeleteI learn something new from you every day!
ReplyDeleteYours in continuing education,
oh how very interesting!! not that i ever leave avocados half cut in the fridge, once they're cut its gobble gobble time but very handy to know! did it taste a bit onion-ey? or the onion a bit avo-ey?
ReplyDeleteAm so going to try this. Happier to waste onions than avos!
ReplyDeleteYou have no idea how timely this post is. Thanks for the hot tip!
ReplyDeleteMegan,
ReplyDeleteso the avo is not meant to absorb the onion smell.
AB,
Onions are good for throwing at bush turkeys.
L,
I did think it was a great tip ... off the Apartment Therapy blog. Can't take all the credit. Be good to your mother.
Thank you for this tip.
ReplyDeleteI'll use it all the time.
LOVE avocados, but not the brown bits.
Great tip, thanks! I hate it when they turn brown.
ReplyDeleteWhat the what! I love it. Tip of the day.
ReplyDeleteAs the only one in the house who eats avocado, this is a very handy tip! Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteahh, I see now. I think I have 3 rotten halves somewhere in the fridge. I will definitely try the onion next time!
ReplyDeleteTried it - worked - even with a red onion. Who knew?! Thanks for the thrifty tip!
ReplyDeleteSonia,
ReplyDeleteit does work! It's a great tip ... not mine originally though.
So happy you tried it.
