Fresh fridge-kept cut avocado? An oxymoron?

Who are you calling a moron?

Nothing irritates me quite as much as having half an avocado go orf in the fridge.

Then I saw an article on Apartment Therapy stating that if you keep an avocado in an airtight container with a chopped onion, it'll stay fresh for days.

It does! For you Readers, I risked it. Child 4 loved it!

The article is here ... click here for the article. It explains why avocados go brown so quickly, and how a chopped onion stops that crazy, complicated, culinary chemical reaction!

I won't go into it ... too complicated for me.

  2. Sister Katherine,
it works. Gobsmacked, was I. (You could ebay a half-cut avocado and by the time the auction's up, it'll still be green!)

  6. oh how very interesting!! not that i ever leave avocados half cut in the fridge, once they're cut its gobble gobble time but very handy to know! did it taste a bit onion-ey? or the onion a bit avo-ey?

  9. Megan,
so the avo is not meant to absorb the onion smell.

    AB,
Onions are good for throwing at bush turkeys.

I did think it was a great tip ... off the Apartment Therapy blog. Can't take all the credit. Be good to your mother.
